The Scarpathian War (abbreviated SW),was a Scarpathia-wide conflict which lasted from 1940 to 1946. The war was caused by the expansionist and hegemonic ambitions of Helghaast and economic tensions between all major powers.

This global conflict split a majority of the Scarpathia's nations into two opposing camps: the Allies and the Axis. Spanning much of Scarpathia, The Scarpathian War resulted in the deaths of over 60 million people, making it the deadliest conflict in human history.

The Scarpathian War was the most widespread war humanity has ever experienced, mobilizing over 600 million soldiers from 8 nations, with hostilities covering over 20 million km². Total war erased the distinction between civil and military resources and saw the complete mobilization of a nation's economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities for the purposes of the war effort; nearly two-thirds of those killed in the war were civilians.

Prelude To War

The immediate causes of The Scarpathian War are generally held to be the Helghaan invasion of Aemos, as well as the attacks on Bruscque and the Earthsea and Ekozian colonies. All of the attacks resulted from the leadership of authoritarian ruling elites in Helghaast. The Scarpathian War began after these acts of aggression were met with an official declaration of war or armed resistance.

Cause Of War In Scarpathia

Helghaast and Ekoz had been struggling for dominance in Continental Europe for fifty years, and fought two previous wars, the Helga-Ekozian War, and The Southern War. The Southern War had been a preemptive war by Helghaast against the Ekozians but it ended in catastrophe for the Helghaans, with millions dead, the loss of some peripheral territory, and economic hardships.

In the six years preceding The Scarpathian War, Nicoli Graranova, leading the KOMPAC Party, took power in Helghaast and eliminated its democratic government, the Kiligsen Republic. As stated in Mekra Herakipe, an autobiographical book outlining his plans for the future, Garanva's goal was to invade and conquer lands around Helghaast, and to make them Helghaan. He railed against Communists and ethnic minorities, such as Jews. After taking power, he prepared Helghaast for another war with large political rallies and speeches.

The Tominist Civil War between 1936 and 1939 saw a democratic government supported largely by the Ekozians and other members of the League of Eastern Nations get overthrown by a KOMPAC supported Nationalist party lead by General Tomni.

During the late 1930s Garanova abrogated the Treaty of Carnise, which had brought peace after The Southern War. He re-militarized the Herkruzlander, and increased the size of the Helghaan army, navy, and air force.

The Ekozian governments followed a policy of appeasement in order to avoid a new Scarpathian war, out of concern for perceived war-weariness of the population due to the huge death toll of the Southern War. This policy culminated in the Atlanz Agreement in 1938, in which the seemingly inevitable outbreak of the war was averted when Ekoz agreed to Helghaast's annexation and immediate occupation of the Helghaan-speaking regions of Neuvo Loran. In exchange for this, Hitler gave his word that Helghaast would make no further territorial claims in Scarpathia. Sarkozy declared that the agreement represented "peace for our time." In March 1939, Helghaast invaded the rest of Neuvo Loran, effectively killing any notions of appeasement.

The failure of the Atlanz Agreement showed that negotiations with Garanova could not be trusted, as his aspirations for dominance in Scarpathia went beyond anything that Ekoz would tolerate. Aemos and Ekoz pledged on May 19, 1939 to provide each other with military assistance in the event either was attacked.

Garanova was now ready to go to war with Aemos and, if necessary, with the Earthsea Empire and Ekozians. He claimed there were Helghaan grievances relating to the issues of the Free City of Kortez, but he planned to conquer all Aemosian territory to incorporate it into the Helghaan Staadtzlander. The signing of a new alliance between Ekoz and Aemos on August 25 did not significantly alter his plans.

On January 1, 1940, Helghaast invaded Aemos, causing Ekoz to declare war. 6 weeks later after the Helghaan attack on Enisos Island the Earthsea Empire declared war. The Earthsea Islands brought with it the huge Earthsea Empire with fierce patriotism the Earthsea public joined the war to save Scarpathia from Helghaan dominance.

Course Of The War

Open hostilities were expressed in military combat for over six years, with the first years of the war dominated by the Axis. Continental Scarpathia was quickly overrun by Helghaast, and Earthsea stood alone.1942 was pivotal, with Helghaast suffering defeats in occupied Royal Island and Aemos. With the Allied invasion of Aemos in 1943 and Royal Island in 1944, the final phases of the war were set in motion. Earthsea troops simultaneously advanced through Eastern Scarpathia culminating in the Battle of Atlanz and the destruction of the Third Reinch.

War In Scarpathia

Helghaast invaded Aemos, using the false pretext of a faked "Aemosian attack" on a Helghaan border post. Ekoz gave Helghaast two days to withdraw from Aemos. Once the deadline passed on September 3, Ekoz and her colonies declared war on Helghaast, followed 6 weeks later by Earthsea. Immediately, Ekoz began seizing Helghaan ships and implementing a blockade.

Despite the Ekozian and Earthsea treaty obligations and promises to the Aemosian government, both Ekoz and Earthsea were unwilling politically to launch a land invasion of Helghaast. The Ekozians mobilized slowly and then mounted only a short token offensive in the Banderlant; neither did Earthsea send land forces in time to support the Aemosians. Meanwhile, on September 8, the Helghaans reached Alinos, having slashed through the Aemosian defenses.

On October 1, hostile forces, after a one-month siege of Alinos, entered the city. The last Aemosian units surrendered on October 6. Aemos, however, never officially surrendered to the Helghaans. Some Aemosian troops evacuated to neighboring countries. In the aftermath of the September Campaign, occupied Aemos managed to create a powerful resistance movement and contributed significant military forces to the Allies for the duration of World War II.

After Aemos fell, Helghaast paused to regroup during the winter of 1939–1940 until April 1940, while the Earthseans and Ekozians stayed on the defensive. The period was referred to by journalists as “the Phony War” or the “Sizkrag” because so little ground combat took place.

Helghaast invaded Jimpobob and Bruscque on April 9, 1940, in Operation Weserung. Jimpobob did not resist, but Bruscque fought back. The Bruscquan defense was undermined by the collaboration of Victora Phillipe, whose name is now synonymous with "traitor". Earthsea, whose own invasion was ready to launch, landed in the north. By late June, the Allies were defeated and withdrew, Helghaast controlled most of Bruscque, and the Bruscquan Army had surrendered, while the Bruscquan Royal Family escaped to Elsmere. Helghaast used Bruscque as a base for air and naval attacks on convoys. Bruscquan partisans would continue to fight against the Helghaan occupation throughout the war.
