Daniel de Holstein e Arantes Barbosa is the Proconsul (President) of the Azorean Republic. Born in 1943, to a rich jewish father and an Ansbacher mother, he spent his childhood in Ponta Delgada. There, he attended the Colégio Militar, one of the best known educational institutions in the Azores. Later he moved to the University of Mercoburg, where he graduated in Sociology.
In 1975 he joined the Partido Liberal Republicano (Liberal Republican Party), having served as Minister of Education and Science from 1989 to 1996. After the formation of the PNR and the establishment of the Fifth Republic, he quickly rose in the Senate, having been elected Proconsul of the Republic in early 2005.
