Canada Selects Cabinet in Hotly Contested Election

Canada, NS - Aug. 17, 2004 - Canada, the fourth largest user created region in NationStates,
in one of the most competitive elections in its history, selected a new cabinet over the
weekend. The incumbent Minister of Justice, Micon, was chosen over former Deputy Prime
Minister, Oilers Fans, by a mere six votes. Beaver-Country-Canada was returned as Minister of
Foreign Affairs, defeating highly regarded newcomers Columberta and Freezing Cold Water.
DrunkenHosers retained the Ministry of Regional Affairs, garnering a convincing 64% of the
vote over opponents Octopolis and Freezing Cold Water. Carbanousa and Ess were acclaimed to
the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Doughnuts and Beer, respectively.

Canadian Prime Minister and UN Delegate Checkers McDog was thrilled by the competitiveness of
the elections and by the participation of several new nations in regional politics. "Though
experience is a vital asset, the newcomers have a fresh perspective on what needs to be done
and what is lacking in the region."

Former Prime Minister, Bweezy, was also encouraged by the involvement of Canada's newer
citizens, but acknowledged the difficulties they faced in getting elected. "Name recognition
matters and, in two cases, we had people running who joined the region less than a week before
the elections. That was a huge disadvantage for them.

Newly elected Minister of Foreign Affairs, Beaver-Country-Canada advised newcomers to take a
more cautious approach. "I think new citizens should not run for office until they have been
on the boards a certain amount of time, and know how the boards work. About a month's
experience is due. That way, as well, it gives you a better chance of winning or receiving
more votes, due to people knowing your name and how you act on the boards."

Oilers Fans, however, was not discouraged by his narrow defeat to the four-term Minister of
Justice. "This loss isn't going to stop me from future elections. I'm glad for Micon. In the
end, experience always wins." He is currently considering applying for the open Deputy
Minister of Justice position.

Dual candidate, Freesing Cold Waters, was similarly unbowed by the results. "[I'm]
disappointed that I did not win, but that is life, so I have to move on." He has recently
launched a new political party and plans on running for office in the next regional elections.

Checkers sees a promising future for the defeated candidates. "I think with more
participation, in the next two months, they have a strong chance of winning in the October
elections."

Minister of Foreign Affairs candidate, Columberta, is already preparing for the next fight.
"This process has made me appreciate what a great region Canada is, where elections are free
and fair and anyone has the chance to challenge for office."

The next elections will be held October 7-12. - [[Blackshear]]
