Newcastle Cup

The Newcastle Cup was created at the beginning of the 10th season of the -League. There are a number of important distinctions between the Newcastle Cup and the Shangri-La Cup. One the Newcastle cup happens before the regular season starts. Two the teams are not randomly drawn but are seeded from 1 to 16 in order of the previous seasons league finish. Third the format is much different and the tiebreakers are much different. The Newcastle cup is a simple single-elimination tournament. The seeds are placed and do not change after that, such that if the 16 and 8 seeds win they meet in the second round. There are no tiebreakers for the Newcastle cup, any match that is drawn after 90 minutes goes to golden goal. Should a team fail to win after two 15 minute golden goal periods there will be a replay.
