The Überkapitaliztrepublik of Commerce Heights, previously the Free-Market Republic of Commerce Heights, was a nation in Paripana from 57 BCE to 2 CE, when it was succeeded by the Unified Capitalizt States.
History
The islands of Paripana were originally settled by the United States of America in May 126 BCE. The colony’s lack of representation in the national government eventually led to rebellion, ending in the formation of the Boopsylvanian Empire in May 104 BCE. As the new government stabilized, heavy immigration occurred and large concentrations of Korean and German populations formed in the north and east, while the American population grew around the cities of Commerce Heights, Columbia (present-day Kumbara), and Cordubovica (near present-day Resonance). As time passed, these regions developed unique cultures from the capital of the Empire, Boopington. This led to a series of revolutions from 57–54 BCE, in which the Korean populations formed the states of Sokojito and Sokojiwa, the German population formed the state of Lontorica, and the primary American population centers became the capitals of Commerce Heights, Bedistan, and Bætica.
The new Commerce Heights government, the Free-Market Republic, quickly elected a prime minister, who never revealed his name, but was known only as Mayor Efficiency. Under Mayor Efficiency, the first Manhattanite colony, then known as St Peters (now 성자 피텃 (Sūŋja Pitūs)), was founded on Syoko Island, in February 51 BCE. When Sonoma Island was discovered to the east, in September of that year, the government determined it to be more suitable for colonization, and struck a deal with Sokojito, having them turn over their colonies on that island in exchange for control of the area surrounding St Peters.
Commerce Heights expanded further in the next decade, by setting up the New Lexington colony on Evestigatus. In December of 43 BCE, due to internal pressures, the Jativan government was forced to relocate to the East Pacific, leaving the Jativan Islands in chaos. Commerce Heights was the first nation to step in, annexing the northern islands in January 42 BCE. Soon afterwards, Bedistan and Bætica made claims to the other islands.
Under Prime Minister Chan Mrzigod, the second leader of Commerce Heights, several reforms were made. Mrzigod attempted to decentralize the government early in his term, in order to make the annexation process smoother. This proved to be beneficial in February 19 BCE, when the governments of Sokojito and Sokojiwa fell. Commerce Heights signed a treaty with Lontorica to split Sokojito—the Manhattanites received southern mainland Sokojito, the north part of Syoko Island, and nearly all of the territory on Evestigatus, Lontorica received northern mainland Sokojito and expanded its holdings on Syoko Island. Mrzigod was a key participant in the push to form the Terranordalis Union, an international organization that helped to resolve intraregional disputes. Late in his second term, he made efforts to streamline the government, producing what came to be known as the Überkapitaliztrepublik.
Some actions, such as the official legalization of certain monopolies, including PariMedia, turned many people against Mrzigod, and he failed to be re-elected for a third term in a landslide. However, since the two leading candidates, Sharkey Carlin and Avery Nanale, both received exactly 598 487 919 votes, Mrzigod continued his job as interim prime minister until the election could be resolved. Carlin was finally awarded the office on 24 February 7 BCE, 264 days after the election.
Carlin was a skilled politician, and he used the government to intervene in the market in ways perceived to be beneficial to workers, such as instituting a minimum wage, enforcing “fair” labor standards, and heavily taxing wealthy citizens. By 3 BCE, his approval rating had soared to over 80%. However, more and more people became opposed to these interventions, and on 18 May 0 CE, an organization known as the Unified Capitalizt States, led by Matthew Yates, declared its independence from the Überkapitaliztrepublik and claimed to be the sole legitimate government of Commerce Heights. Several small engagements took place during the revolution, the most deadly of which was a bombing of the Aeropag Tribune building in Aeropag, the headquarters of the Unified Capitalizt States. The revolution ended peacefully in 2 CE, when Jack Dalton, who secretly supported the revolution, was elected as prime minister and disbanded the Überkapitaliztrepublik as his only official act.
