This article refers to a General Election in Niploma

History

Niploma has suffered political turmoil in 2006. The 15th GE is the second GE in under a year. The reason for several elections is due to no party being able to gain absolute control in Niploma's lower house the Democratic House. In earnest to solve the problem current PM Torin called an election fully aware he was likely to lose.

New Voting

A major change has occurred in Niplomian voting. To try and have the Democratic House as more representative of citizens and also to create a majority the new mixed-member voting system was applied. In this election 200 seats are fought as PVS constituencies (first-past-the-post) whilst the remaining 500 seats are fought under party-list (proportional representation). In addition ten extra seats will be up for election in The Anumist Alliance. A confusing and unproportional system is to be used. This is to allow Niplomian citizens abroad a voice in the political system.

Running Parties

In addition over twenty other parties are running and are highly unlikely to win a single seat. As per usual southern-based parties cannot stand. Also, the Rev. Workers Union has disbanded and ergo is not standing.

Adding to the total is the newly formed Democratic Party of Niploma, a radically social centrist but economically right wing party formed on 12th June. It consists of Grand Conservative members dis-connected with Niploma Firsts radical social message, some of the more conservative LRP members and numerous others. It is mostly centered at small and large businesses alike. It is unlikely to gain much more than 1-2% of the vote but the DPN announced that it's creation could, 'Certainly aid other parties in need of a Coalition government.'

Pre-Election

First Poll

Prior to the news of a new election (which was called on 31st May by Torin who planned an election, 'by August') 5,000 Niplomian citizens were asked,

who would you vote in a popular vote if there were a General Election tomorrow?

The elections are so:

  • Libertarian Reform Party - 44%
  • People's Coalition - 36%
  • Niplomian Labour Party - 8%
  • Official Communist Workers Party - 7%
  • Niploma First - 5%

This is reflective of the recent centrist move by the People's Coalition. Although this was expected to gain votes for PC it simply meant the leftist voters chose the Labour party and the LRP supporters remained loyal under the likelihood of Government. Luckily for Niploma Niploma First shows a lack of support. It was believed their vote share could increase due to the portrayal that 'democracy is failing' in Niploma. However, it appears voters are more keen to vote on one of the two major parties due to the tough fight no for Government. Regardless, this poll would reflect into the Democratic House as a landslide for the Reformers.

To fight back Peoples Coalition announced they would 'shift left' for Niploma although this was expected to cause huge problems in the Cabinet which is mostly supportive of a free-market. Yet, PM Torin announced that, 'I believe now is the time to shift into gear and 'sweap to the left'. If we win this election our first priority will be the workers'. Commentators predict this could take a sizeable chunk of minor party votes although could lose the PC's 'central status'. LRP announced that its key factor would be the radical change of Niploma. This could lose LRP's statues as a steady party.

Second Poll

The second poll was held on 7th June by the polling organization 'RES'. The same question was asked and the results were as follows:

  • Libertarian Reform Party - 44%
  • People's Coalition -35%
  • Niplomian Labour Party - 9%
  • Official Communist Workers Party - 6%
  • Niploma First - 5%
  • 'Others' - 1%

Although 'RES' conducted a poll they also projected a Democratic House projection due to current polls, bets, current composition of Senate and Democratic House and likely votes of constituencies. The projection is so:

  • Libertarian Reform Party - 315 (95 Constituencies)
  • People Coalition - 232 (57 Constituencies)
  • Niplomian Labour Party - 68 (23 Constituencies)
  • Official Communist Workers Party - 52 (22 Constituencies)
  • Niploma First - 27 (2 Constituencies)


Radical Change

Niplomian politics experienced a radical change on 8th June. The 'Socialist Internationalist Party' (ruling member of the People's Coalition) destroyed the Coalition and itself. Leading member Torin had reached several disagreements with the Greens in the coalition, the Liberals and the Gaelic Party. On the 8th all reached an agreement to go separate ways.

SIP changed rapidly and Torin, along with most members, declared that himself and various party officials were exchnaging SIP's account and members into the new Social-Democratic Party of Niploma - a more centre-left party more inline with what Torin exclaimed, 'Niploma wants and needs'. Meanwhile the Ecological Foudnation Party lead by Elwes split too and created the Green Party of Niploma. The party aimed to differ from the People's Coalition by absorbing capitalistic views hand in hand with old-liberalism and strong green values. Socialist Labour members were advised to join the Niplomian Labour Party or, if they do so wish, the more hardline Official Communist Workers Party. The Gaelic Party and the Liberals joined their two parties together creating the Liberal-Gaelic Alliance aiming to combine strong civil rights, an open market and strong Gaelic values and traditions. The remaining Catholic Conservatives entered into agreement with several Christian religious groups and created the strong moral group named the Christian Democratic Party of Niploma.

Such large changes were finalized by 20th June with the official signing of each party to the electoral register.

First Poll

After numerous changes in parties in the last fortnight the popular newspaper Niploma Today endorsed a small newspaper. It asked two questions:

  • Niplomian Labour Party - 17%
  • Green Party - 11%
  • Official Communist Workers Party - 5%

Due to the radical change in the political landscape do you feel disappointed and/or confused with the current situation?

  • Yes - 60%
  • No - 33%
  • Don't Know - 7%

In response many politicians declared that is was important an election be held, even if bewildering to the public. Although the SDP had suffered in the People's Coalition it appears the economic stability and its general respect has allowed it to retain some support. Labour has almost ensured a double in seat numbers and could expect to win more support. The LRP has almost retained support - a disappointing result for a party that expects more. However, a more central SDP, a capitalist DPN and a Liberal-Gaelic Party has allowed the LRP support base to slip. LRP leader, David McKibben, declared he was pleased with numerous poll results and promised, along with other parties, a long period of stability.
