The fifth general election was held on 12 October 2006. The outgoing Prime Minister was Lord Shackleford.

There were 500,234,561 valid votes cast.

The Social Democratic-Green alliance won 172 seats; the Liberal-Conservative alliance won 45. The Liberal Democrats won one. Lord Morrissey succeeded Lord Shackleford as Prime Minister.

Lord Morrissey's freshness carried the day in the left's largest majority yet. Worst hit were the Conservatives, who lost more than a third of their seats the second election in a row and were the only party not to gain at least one seat. The Liberal Democrats re-entered Parliament (Virginia Halley won back her seat). The Greens came within four percent of the Liberals' popular vote share.
