The 6.66mm "Dante" round was developed by Phoenix Dynamix in 2005 as an intermediate round to fill the gap between the heavy .450 Phoenix rifle and machinegun round and the standard 10mm Auto pistol round, much as the 5.56mm bridged the gap between the 9mm parabellum and the 7.62mm NATO round. The top engineers at Phoenix Dynamix worked with The Phoenix Milita's DARPA to produce the "perfect" round. Although a cartridge of about 6.7x50mm was originally agreed upon to be the best for the job, the existence of the Freedom Country 6.62mm round, along with CEO Maximus Seville II's twisted sense of humor, contributed to the final decision to manufacture the 6.66x46mm round. The original 6.62mm rifle, the FC-57, was re-manufactured specifically to accept the 6.66mm cased rounds. The CAR-24, which was a modernized assault rifle designed to fire the 6.62mm FC round, was easily modified to fire the new Dante round. The AR-66, which would be the first rifle built from the ground up for the 6.66mm round, was produced in a caseless only version at first, although current versions can accept the brass cased or explosive matrix enclosed versions of the round. 6.66mm bullets are produced in full metal jacket or Teflon coated variants, although sub-sonic, hollow-point, soft point and training rounds also exist.
