There are three branches of Adam Island's military, known as the Adamswehr. Individual arms of service as the Adamsheer (Army), Adamsmarine (Navy) and Adamsluftwaffe (Air Force).

The armed forces owe their allegiance to the National Republic forged after years of religious-caused civil war (starting in August 2004) and the Rat Flu epidemic-caused civil war (starting in January 2005). The National Republic was acknowledged by the Treaty of Adamsburgh as the sole legitimate government on May 3, 2006. The three signatories were the loyalist National Republic, Neo-Royalist and Holy Reformer representatives, who jointly agreed to eliminate the remaining Iconic groups on the northern mainland.

The modern organization of the Adamswehr was developed by the military during the Rat Flu war in conjunction with scholars from the Ministry of Community Defence of Sober Thought.

Officially, the Adamswehr is a department of the executive branch, headed by the President.

Adamsheer

The mainland island of Adam Island proper is sufficiently large that the army has become the dominant arm of service like most other RL and NS countries.

The head of the whole army is the Grand General of the Adamsheer. This rank and all the other top ranking officers was created after November 2005, when the respective generals of the loyalist National Republic and the rebel Holy Reformers signed the Treaty of Las Adam ending the civil war. Without this rank, it would be uncertain which of the senior generals was in fact at the very top.

Field armies, consisting of two or more corps plus other units, are commanded by Generals. Field corps, consisting of two or more field divisions plus other units, by General Lieutnants. Field divisions, consisting of three or four field regiments plus supporting regiments, by General Majors. Field regiments are commanded by Colonels, battalions by Majors, companies by Hauptmanns and platoons by Captains or Lieutenants.

Battalions and below exist only as subdivisions of field regiments. Field regiments and upwards are designated as being in one of the following branches of service:

  • Panzer, tanks, armoured cars, assault guns
  • Panzergrenadier, mechanised infantry combat vehicles, armoured personnel carriers
  • Fallschirmjäger, parachute infantry
  • Gebirgsjäger, mountain infantry
  • Jäger, foot soldiers
  • Heersflieger, army aviation utility, observation, attack and transport helicopters
  • Raketeartillery, nuclear and conventional rockets
  • Artillerie, conventional artillery guns
  • Technik, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering (a speciality of the former Neo-Royalists)
  • Sanitäts, medical, health (a specialty of the loyalist National Republicans)
  • Logistik, supply, transport.

The army is equipped with nuclear weapons, but is a lot more security-conscious with them since August 27, 2004. On that date terrorists affiliated with the Holy Reformers' rebel group detonated a nuclear device at Fort Adam in the south-central mainland. The country's entire arsenal was destroyed and the majority of the army was killed or rendered ineffective.

Currently, there are four major army bases, all located on the mainland:

  • Adam City, southeast, general headquarters
  • Adamville, southwest, former Neo-Royalist stronghold
  • Llama City, centre, a former Iconic stronghold
  • San Adam, northeast.

Adamsmarine

To state the obvious, the country of Adam Island sits on an archipelago made up of many islands. Thus, the navy has an important role in defending the insular country.

The head of the whole navy is the Grand Admiral of the Fleet. Unlike the army, the actual units represent ships instead of regiments or battalions, and formations are more fluid. It has four branches based on the roles and operating environments of the naval forces.

Below the surface are two types of Unterseeboote, or submarines. The navy's nuclear weapons are carried by large Raketeunterseeboote or RU-boots. These small but powerful -- intercontinental ballistic missiles carrying -- vessels are commanded by Captains. Their smaller diesel-powered hunter-killer submarine (Jagdunterseeboot or JU-boot) counterparts are commanded by Lieutenants. JU-boots may operate singly like their larger siblings, in Jagdgruppes made up of JU-boots only and commanded by Commanders, or in heterogenous Geschwarderchens by Commanders or Captains, or heterogenous Geschwarders by Captains or Rear Admirals.

Above the surface are two types of Marinefliegertruppen, or naval aviation troops, in one of three types: Unterseekriegs for anti-submarine warfare, Seeschütz for maritime patrol, Luftschütz for air defence and Sturm for ground attack. The fleet's light aircraft carriers bring naval aviation to the enemy afloat, the carriers themselves commanded by Captains, their embarked Marinefliegergeschwarder by Commanders and the whole Marinefliegerkampfgruppe including escorting warships under a Rear Admiral. The fleet's maritime patrol aircraft conduct coastal surveillance, interdiction and anti-submarine warfare. Major naval bases have at least one Marinefliegergeschwarder each, and minor ones usually a single Marinefliegerstaffel.

Major surface combattants are warships equipped for defending against surface, subsurface and aerial attack. In decreasing size, destroyers are commanded by Commanders, frigates by Lieutenant Commanders and corvettes by Lieutenants. Between four and twelve frigates or destroyers may form a permanent or temporary Geschwarder (Squadron) under a Captain or Rear Admiral. Two dozen or more frigates, destroyers and corvettes -- with or without escort carriers -- operating in two or more Geschwarders make one Flotte (Fleet) under a Vice Admiral. A huge naval force comprising two or more Flottes make one Grossflotte (Grand Fleet) under a full Admiral.

Minor surface combattants are boats designed to be built cheaply and move quickly against other surface and subsurface vessels. Schnellboote, or S-boots, are small high-speed torpedo and rocket boats commanded by Lieutenants. Minenwerfenboote, or MW-boots, are small minelayers commanded by Lieutenants. Minenabwehrboote, or MA-boots, are larger slower moving minesweepers commanded by Lieutenants. Between four and twenty-four surface boats or JU-boots may form a permanent or temporary Geschwarderchen (Small Vessel Squadron) commanded by an Commander or Grosskapitän. Several dozen small vessels in two or more Geschwarderchens make one Flottille (Flotilla) under a Rear Admiral.

The Adamsmarine is used far more often during natural disasters than most RL or NS navies. For instance, in the late 1990s massive flooding destroyed some homes but emergency sand-bagger deployment by the entire Adamsmarine and hundreds of thousands of volunteers prevented the rising water from destroying any of Adam City's numerous historical buildings and famous landmarks like the Adamdome.

Currently, there are seven naval bases of various sizes and roles on the main and outlying islands:

  • Adam City, central mainland, naval headquarters, major, ships and aircraft
  • Adam Harbour, eastern mainland in former Iconic stronghold, major, naval aviation only
  • Adamaiin Island, island northwest of mainland, minor, ships and aircraft
  • Adamsburgh, south central mainland covering the inland sea, minor, boats and aircraft
  • Cape Adam, island known as Neo-Royalist stronghold, minor, ships and aircraft
  • Las Adam, western mainland, major, ships and aircraft
  • Port Adam, eastern mainland in former Iconic stronghold, major, mainly ships

The former main naval and army base at Fort Adam on an outlying island was irradiated by nuclear terrorists during the multi-sided civil war.

Adamsluftwaffe

Air travel and air defence are important to the country of Adam Island because it is a chain of islands which relies on air and sea routes to connect with itself, the International Democratic Union and the broader NationStates world.

The head of the whole air force is the Grand General of the Adamsluftwaffe. Air assets are also managed directly by the Army (Heeresfliegertruppen) and the Navy (Marinefliegertruppen).

It has seven types of Squadrons under Lieutenant Colonel, each equipped with different aircraft or different aircraft variants:

  • A-Bomber, nuclear strategic bombers
  • Bomber, conventional strategic bombers
  • Grosstransport, strategic transport
  • Jagd, escort fighters
  • Kleintransport, tactical transport
  • Luftschütz, air defence fighters
  • Sturm, fighter-bombers, ground attack

Below this level, Geschwarder consist of two to four Staffel, or Flights, each of at least four aircraft. Above this level, two to five Geschwarder make a Fliegergruppe or Air Group under a Wing Captain; two to five Fliegergruppes a Fliegerdivision or Air Division under an Adam Vice Marshal; two plus Fliegerdivisions a Fliegerkorps or Air Corps; and two plus Fliegerkorps a Luftflotte or Air Fleet.

Currently, there are seven air bases of various sizes and roles on the main and outlying islands:

  • Adam City, southeast mainland, capital, shared with army base, major, air defence
  • Adamville, southwest mainland, former Neo-Royalist stronghold, shared with army base, minor, transport and ground attack
  • Llama City, centre mainland, former Iconic stronghold, shared with army base, major, ground attack and transport
  • San Adam, northeast mainland, shared with army base, major, nuclear bomber, escort and transport
  • Rio de Adam , southwest mainland, former Neo-Royalist stronghold, air base only, major, bomber and escort
  • Adamyoto, outlying island to the southeast with naval base at Cape Adam, air base only, major, bomber and escort
  • Adamaiin Island, island northwest of mainland with naval base, minor, bomber and escort
