Aivenburg is the largest city and the capital of the Democratic Soviet Republic of Avareelia and its political region Kirpfenberg.

History

Aivenburg has been founded in 1193 as Aiwwe Burkh near to a castle (german: Burg) at the river Aive. As it has been near to the point where the important streets from Umptzow to Ellerstfurt and Miltenstein and the one from the north-west to Puerm and Aivhaven meat each other, it quickly developped into a rich commercial town. In 1550, it had for the first time more than 20,000 inhabitants and was the third biggest one of all towns in what is Avareelia today. Only Aivhaven (67,000 inhabitants) and Waldau-Gerbstein (41,000) were bigger. The merchants who had settled in Aivenburg built the gorgeous renaissance villas for which the old town is still famous in our days, aswell as the University of the Seven Arts (in 1555), the Cathedral of our Holy Virgin (in 1579) and the Aive Park (in 1603).

It have then been two unexpected events that mainly caused Aivenburg´s dominant position it has today: the Great Flood of Aivhaven in 1625, that destroyed 30 - 40 % of the city, and the War of Nine Years (1634-43), after which Waldau-Gerbstein and the surrounding territories were no longer part of Avareelia, made king Johann VII and his court move to Aivenburg, which became the capital of Avareelia in 1644, no 500 years after its foundation.

As Avareelia´s political centre and a very important city as far as culture and economy were concerned, the city at the Aive grew constantly. In 1771, it had 500,000 inhabitants, 1 million were reached in 1813. When Avareelia was conquered by Aventuricustan in 1865, 2,733,000 people inhabited the capital, and in 1928, the year of the Avareelian socialist revolution, there were 6,011,000 of them.

Togehter with the number of inhabitants, also the space grew that Aivenburg needed. The early 20th century saw the establishment of various suburbs that are now called the Beton Belt because they were built up around the centre and the older parts of the town, and costs or speed played much more important roles than a nice townscape. Form follows function can be seen as the leitmotif of the new quarters. But the most temendous building project took place in the late 50s and early 60s: Government Quarter, a monumental representation area including the Council of Avareelia, the Equality Monument, the Star Park and many other famous buildings was the most expensive building project Avareelia has ever seen. It had become necessary due to the bombardments of Aivenburg in World War 2 that had destroyed the old government buildings aswell as some of the historical sights.
