Overview

The Alliance of Socialist States is one of the oldest left-progressive/socialist regions in all of NationStates. They are a fully democratic region that employs a government consisting of a Delegate, a Vice-Delegate, and an Ombudsman (people's representative).

Elections

The Region's UN delegate is typically elected by popular vote every 60 days. The vote is supervised by the Ombudsman and throughout the election and transition of power the region is passport protected.

The October/November 2006 elections were the first elections in which parties were required to provide candidates. As a result of this, there were unexpectedly five candidates (two independents also ran). The first round, in which every member of the region had one vote, returned a deadlock. Lingua, the Ombudsman, then attempted another 'first round' using preferential voting, which still returned no clear winner but two main contenders: Inn (People's Party) and Niita (Independent). Inn and Niita then faced each other in a second round, which Niita won.
