The internationally recognized symbol of the Allied Union Air Defense Force.

Role

The Allied Union Air Defense Force (AUADF) exists for the sole purpose of defending Velkya and her allies in the skies, both at home and abroad. However, this expansive objective is broken down into several specific subroles. These roles are paramount to the success of the Air Defense Force and the Velkyan military as a whole.

  • Protection of the territory and interests of both the Allied Union, the Allied Union's allies, and their respective citizenery and governments from airborne attack.
  • Projection of air power unto enemy foreign soil in support of ground operations or independent of them.
  • Protection of civilian air travel and trade in Velkya and her allies abroad.

History

Beginnings

Formally formed in 2013, the AUNDF can trace it's roots back to the earlier Velkyan Air Force, which existed from 2000-2013, and even further to various air forces, air corps, and signal corps of Osea, Eurusia, Selka, and Courtina. The first recorded and recognized aerial combat forces to appear on the Velkyan mainland are most likely the Osean Signal Corps Aerial Observation Battalion, which was formed to aid the artillery gunners of Osea in their various skirmishes against Selka and Eurusia. They made their first combat debute in western Eurusia in the Gold Wars, in which the gold-laden mountains that make up the border of Eurusia and Selka were a flashpoint for conflict for nearly thirty years. An Osean Expeditionary Force was sent to claim Cragg's Peak, a mountain with a sizable gold deposit at it's center. In a light skirmish, the Osean troops dispatched the Selkan pioneers guarding the mountain, and took control. In response, the 83rd Imperial Grenadeirs marched on the peak, vastly outnumbering and outgunning their Osean counterparts. All hope was seemingly lost as the 83rd surrounded the mountain, showering the remaining troops with inaccurate but immense volumes of cannon fire. The Osean artillery, though indivudually superior were outnumbered four-to-one and as such were hard-pressed to counter the Imperial Grenadiers, and it seemed they would be slaughtered, until a small force managed to slip through the cracks in the Selkan lines in the dead of night. The force was none other than a OSCAOB team, complete with a observation balloon with a small field telephone. The balloon was raised, and the battle began anew the following day.

At dawn, the Selkan troops smelled victory, and pushed forward en masse (in massive, unsuitable battlelines). The Osean soldiers, numbering only about 900 against a force of 10,000, hid in the craggs of the mountain as they deployed their wild card. Soon, the familiar din of enemy artillery filled the air, but it was not to be. Osean cannons, using rudimentry fire control from the crew of the balloon, began a furious counterbarrage, and within a few hours, had routed the Selkan advance. Sadly, late in the battle, an enemy shrapnel shell penetrated the balloon 's skin, sending it hurling to the ground, killing it's crew. Even still, the Osean force pushed back the enemy advance, and with the aid of reinforcements from the 4th Main City Division, secured the rest of the mountain range. Because of their great sacrifice, Sgt. Matthew Peterson and Lt. Zeke Mikal, the men crewing the balloon during the battle, were buried in Oak Park National Cemetery in Oured, and a memorial erected in their honor still stands at the AUADF acemdemy in Zepyher Falls, Osea.

Formation

After the unification of Velkya in 2000 and the subsequent formation of it's military in early 2001, the Velkyan Air Force was given it's first aircraft wing, consisting of four sqaudrons of United States Air Force equipment. This first air wing, headquartered in November City, participated in many of the first Velkyan military actions, including the failed invasion of Tigerlan, and has been an intergal part of the air forces of Velkya, and remains so to this day.

Current Status

As of this fiscal year (2020), the Allied Union Air Defense Force currently operates sixty seperate combat ready air divisions, consisting of roughly one thousand aircraft each. Each air division is a completely self-contained air force, containing all types of aircraft. The sixty divisions are futher divided into over six hundred wings, which in turn consists of six thousand (usually ten aircraft) sqaudrons. Each wing of an air division has a specific purpose and role, reflected by it's aircraft makeup. Usually, over half of a wing is made up of five composite interceptor, air superiority, and electronics warfare aircraft, with the second half consisting of several bomber wings (two tactical and one strategic), along with two transport wings.
