Role

The Allied Union Naval Defense Force (AUNDF) exists for the sole purpose of defending Velkya and her allies on the high seas, both at home and abroad. However, this expansive objective is broken down into several specific subroles. These roles are paramount to the success of the Naval Defense Force and the Velkyan military as a whole.

  • Protection of the territory and interests of both the Allied Union, the Allied Union's allies, and their respective citizenery and governments.
  • Protection of the economic interests of the Allied Union and her allies, including trade routes, ports, freighters, fisherys, and fuel interests.
  • Protection of the internal security interests of the Allied Union, including protecting against illegal narcotics operations, illegal arms trading, terrorism, and illegal immigration.

History

Beginnings

Formally formed in 2013, the AUNDF can trace it's roots back to the earlier Velkyan Navy, which existed from 2000-2013, and even earlier still to the various Osean, Selken, Courtainian, and Eurusian fleets and navies. The first recorded military vessel in Velkya, an Eurusian galleon, the Vostok, was constructed in 1382, during the reign of Luigi III, an Italian-born prince and ruler of Eurusia. He pushed for the modernization (at the time) of Eurusia's merchant fleets, and soon decreed that a special branch of the Royal Army devoted to naval warfare be created. Most historians and experts on the subject agree this was the foundation for the current AUNDF over 730 years in the future. Soon, Selka (and later Courtina), responded by building it's own crude fleets, and the first recorded naval battle in Velkyan waters, The Battle Of Harper's Cove, was fought between Selken privateers and a Royal Eurusian Fleet under the command of Admiral Proudmoore, an English immigrant and former captain in the English fleet, in the waters off Kuzida Isle in 1452. The battle involved fifty-three ships and lasted nearly two days, as the cannons (suffering from poor quality powder due to a large storm which had passed through the area days before) on either side failed to make an impression on the other. Soon, the numerically superior (but technologically inferior) Selkens began an all out rush against the Eurusian battleline, using whatever cannon they had left along with a colorful array of small arms and even a few crossbows. Unbeknownst to them, the Eurusians had been resupplied secretly by foreign traders, and as the Selkens approached, they split into two battle lines, showering the Selkens with deadly solid and grapeshot fire. By that night, three Selken ships remained afloat and in friendly hands, with the other thirty-one having been either captured, crippled, or shot to pieces. They quickly sailed away, ceeding a total victory to the Eurusians (who had only lost five ships). This battle was instrumental in establishing Eurusian dominance of the Eaglin Sea until the emergence of the Courtainian and Osean navies.

Formation

The Velkyan Navy (along with the Velkyan Air Force and Army) was formed at the Second Southport Conference in early 2001. It's flagship, the V.S.S. Eagle (the first of the Eagle Class Carriers), was launched from Southport Naval Yard in 2003, and soon, the ASV (Allied States of Velkya, formally changed to Allied Union of Velkya in 2013) Navy had two operational battle groups, and an additional amphibious assault fleet and a flottila of oilers, hospital ships, tenders, and other support vessels. The beginning of a new era in the ASV Navy was launched when the first Gigantor Class battleship (the first of it's type used by the Velkyan Navy) was constructed in the near-frozen port city of Vladistock, Velkya. It led the first ever surface action battlegroup, and was the first Velkyan vessels to fire a shot in anger (one that mistakenly hit Leafanistani naval forces off Very Small Island, resulting in a nearly catostrophic friendly fire incident). After this incident, the Velkyan Navy continued to act in peacekeeping operations, growing larger and larger, seemingly by the day. By the time of Velkyan participation in the Kraven Wars, the navy was over a thousand warships strong and contained several Velkya class command battlecarriers.

Current Status

As of this fiscal year (2023), the Allied Union Naval Defense Force currently operates fifteen bluewater battlefleets of approxmimently five hundred combat ships each (although this number may fluctuate with time as older ships are removed and newer ones are added), along with several thousands logistical and brownwater vessels. These ships, along with the newly arrived indiginously designed Ascendant Justice-class of command battleships, will spearhead the NDF into the next generation.
