The Republic of An Blacoad Mor, better known as An Blascoad Mor(English:Great Blasket Island) is a tiny island country off the coast of Sorthern Northland. A ferry service runs daily from Sorthern Northland to the island.
Geography
The island lies approximately 2 km from Sorthern Northland's Dunmore Head, and extends 6 km to the southwest, rising to 292 metres at its highest point (An Cro). Although just 2km from Sorthern Northland the island can go weeks or even months without access to the mainland particularly in winter due to the rough seas and the difficult sea crossing. Storms are not uncommon.
Climate
- Highest maximum temperature: 35.2°C (95.4°F).
- Lowest minimum temperature: -23.3°C (-10°F).
- Maximum number of hours of sunshine in a month: 354.3 hours.
- Minimum number of hours of sunshine in a month: 89.5 hours.
- Maximum rainfall in a day (0900 RSN - 0900 RSN): 211 mm (8.30 inches).
Language
Despite it's close connections to the trilingual Sorthern Northland, Irish is the only language spoken on An Blascoad Mor. However the island does have a large number of visitors from Sorthern Northland who would speak either Irish, English, or Northlandish.
Religion
Although Chapter 2 of the Constitution states that no religion shall have a state character, Roman Catholicism is the main religion in the country. About 76% of Islander's self-identify as Catholics, about 2% with another religious faith, and about 19% identify as non-believers or atheists. A study conducted in October 2006 by the Island Centre of Sociological Investigations shows that from the 76% of Islanders who identify as Catholics or other religious faith, 54% hardly ever or never go to church (although this is in part down to the fact that the island itself has no church, the nearest church is located in Sorthern Northland), 15% go to church some times a year, 10% some time per month. About 22% of the whole Island population attend religious services at least once a month.
