Overview

Apocoronas (officially the Republic of Apocoronas) is a country in the Mediterranean sea, located to the south of Greece. It comprises the Island of Crete[1], the island of Gavdos and other small (mostly uninhabited) islands. Crete makes up 95% of Apokoronas land area -8,336 km² (3,219 square miles)- and it's the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. This area is mostly mountainous in the central and south region of the island. At the eastern part the ground is extremely fertile, with lots of olive trees. Apocoronas is surounded by sea, therefore it has a big coastline. The Capital of Apocoronas is Nio Horio, located at the Western part of Crete island. Apocoronas is a popular tourist destination; its attractions include the ancient Minoan sites, the Samaria Gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and beaches. Apocoronas is inhabited since 2600 BCE, since Crete was the centre of the Minoan[2] Civilization, the oldest Civilization in Europe.

Economy

Apocoronas economic model is based on a free market that respects the preconditions set by the government. Private sector is encouraged by the state as long as it matches the legistlation.

Apocoronas economy is based on tourism (top quality facilities, cooperation of public and private sector) and agriculture.

The main agricultural products are :

• olive oil (top quality)
• wines
• oranges
• avocado
• potatoes
• greens

There are several stone quarries providing material tha covers the needs of the country. Farthermore, scientific researches proved the existance of subaqueous oil resources at the south.

Government

Apocoronas is a Republic. The President of the Republic, currently Nikos Xylouris, has no special authority. It is more a honorable statesmanship. The president is elected by the parliament every 5 years. Parliamentary elections are held every 4 years and a simple proportional electoral system is in use. There are two major parties. The Socialdemocratic Party of Apocoronas (S.K.A.)and the right wing party of Neolibaral Action (N.D.) . SKA rules the country the last 9 years. Other parties, joining the parliament are : the Communist Party (K.K.A) the Ecologists (O.K.A.) and the extreme right party of Patriotic Resurrection (P.ANA.) . SKA governs in a coaliation with the Ecologists.

Nature

Apocoronas is the home of many rare wild animals, like Cretan Aegagrus[3] (kri-kri), arkalos[4] (badger), mavropetritis[5] (wild hawk)and the most famous of all, Fourogatos[6](wild cat). Fourogatos lives only in the island of Crete and it's a legendary animal since it's very rare to see one of those. It looks like a cat but it's bigger whith black flocks on it's ears and it's coat is full of spots. It has a bushy tail with three black rings at the lower part and a black edge. It's basic coat colour is brown and gray. It lives in the woods and in canions and appears during the night. Don't even think of cuddling it.
