The Holy Meritocratic Republic of Argyres (HMR) is the former colony of the Argyri Empire, which was destroyed in 1453 by the Carath. The original colonists of the region were joined by many thousands of refugees from the former Empire. Following some years of turmoil, a republic was declared in 1486, modeled as a constitutional monarchy. The current monarch is Iason d'Meganissi , now styled as Iason I Argyres, while the head of the government is President Judas Ephialtes.

Argyres is located in the center of The New Meritocracy, near traditional Kitimat Pact allies as well as the Meritocratic Administrative Destrict. As would be expected of a country of its considerable size, Argyres contains a wide variety of terrain and climates, though it is most famous for its coastal regions. Though well-respected by its fellow residents of The New Meritocracy, it has been racked by political dissension and civil war in recent years.

Approximately three years ago, the Holy Meritocratic Republic and the nation of Iasonia, a former Imperial colony, both voted to unify their territories, marking the largest territorial increase in Republic history. Following the enosis , though, a series of terrorist attacks struck both Argyres and Iasonia.

Major Cities

The capital of Argyres is Adelphia, a model of the capital of Old Argyres, Pella. Within its limits, and those of its suburbs, live approximately 25 million Argyris, but it is more noted for the Royal Palace, residence of the monarch, and the other seats of government, including the Presidential Palace and the Parliament. Adelphia is also the largest port in Argyres, and is home to a major naval base, second only to that at Metropolis.

Other notable cities include the city of Byzantium, current seat of the Patriarch of the Argyri Orthodox Church, and Valar, the capital of the northern provinces.
