The Armada de Ultramar is the second largest branch of the Vassfforcian armed forces and has primary responsibility for water-based military operations. As of 2005, it consisted of 105’155 seamen on active duty, 39’397 in the Coast Guard and 110’000 in the Reserve. The reserve is primarily composed of part-time seamen who train for two months a year and once a week.

The modern Armada de Ultramar has its roots in the Ducal Navy and the warships the Compañía Naviera de Ultramar had to protect its shipments from the pirates.

The navy is managed by the Ministry of War which is headed by the War Minister who heads administrative affairs. The highest ranking military officer in the navy is the Primer Almirante.

The initialism AVU designates Vassfforcian warhips and means Armada Vassfforcia de Ultramar (Vassffocian Navy of Other Seas) in contrast to the Armada de Litorales (Vassfforcia Coast Guard).

Structure

Officially, a member of the Armada de Ultramar is called marino (Spanish for seaman).

The Armada is made up of four components: the active component, the Warship Crews, the marines and Service Legions; and the reserve component. Reserve legions are primarily composed of part-time seamen who train in a ship for two months a year and once a week in navy facilities.

The Armada Ducal is led by a military Head Chief of the Navy (the Primer Almirante), who reports to the War Minister (for now it is the Generalísimo Don Bernardo Reyes). The Primer Almirante is a member of the High Command, the top ranking military commanders from each service who advise the Grand Duke on military and disaster matters.

Operationally, though, control of the navy in wartime goes from the Grand Duke of the Most Serene Republic of Vassfforcia to the Concejo de Guerra, who has control of all armed forces units in their geographic area of responsibility.

The whole Vassfforcian navy is organized in function of the Carrier Fleets, of which there are ten (each named after the supercarrier):

Each under the command of a Capitán de Flota; except for the AVU Neptuno, which is the flagship of the Armada; thus it is assigned to the Primer Almirante Don Mauricio Torre Bruno. Every Vassfforcian carrier group is formed by the supercarrier, two destroyers, three missile cruisers and two attack submarines.
