The Army of Sel Appa is the largest and oldest branch of the armed forces of Sel Appa. Like all armies, it has the primary responsibility for land-based military operations.

The modern Army had its roots in the Sel Nemnen army which was formed around 1990 BCE, before the establishment of the Sel Appan empire, to meet the demands of the growing population of Sel Nemnen. The Army considers itself to be descended from the Sel Nemnen Army, and thus dates its inception from the origins of that force.

Control and operation of the Army is administered by the Department of the Army, one of the three service departments of the Defense Ministry. The civilian head is the Defense Minister and the highest ranking military officer in the department is the Chief Secretary. As of 2007, the Regular Army reported a strength _ soldiers. The Reserve Militia reported a strength of _.

Uniforms

The Army utilizes a standard camouflage outfit for most active service roles. A red military beret is worn whenever possible. The standard uniform is designed for use in virtually every environment needed, notably forest, desert, and urban areas. Bullet-resistant vests are also an integral part of active combat uniforms, in addition to other body armor.

There are plans to introduce a new high-tech combat uniform starting around 2012. It will employ the use of nanotechnology, artificial powered exoskeletons, and other technologies. Further plans extend into 2025, using now-theoretical technologies.

For ceremonial duties, the full dress uniform is made up of a tunic, trousers, and combination cap, all in dark olive, with a red (for enlisted) or gold (for officers) sash and epaulettes.

Equipment

Individual weapons

The primary individual weapons of the Army are the AK-47 and AK-74 assault rifles. Some soldiers whose duties require a more compact weapon, such as combat vehicle crew members, staff officers, and military police, are issued a sidearm in lieu of (or in addition to) a rifle. The most common sidearm in the Army is the 9 mm SAP9 pistol which is issued to the majority of combat and support units.

In addition to these basic rifles and sidearms, many combat units' arsenals are supplemented with a variety of specialized weapons, including the RPK Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) light machine-gun, to provide suppressive fire at the squad level and the SAP118 Long Range Sniper Rifle for snipers. Hand grenades are also commonly used by combat troops.

Vehicles

The Army of Sel Appa is fully mechanized, and spends a sizable portion of its military budget to maintain a diverse inventory of vehicles. The Army maintains a high vehicle-to-soldier ratio.

The Army's most common vehicle is the HMMWV (High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle), which is capable of serving as a cargo/troop carrier, weapons platform, and ambulance, among many other roles. The SAP-90 is the Army's primary main battle tank, while the SAP-105 is the standard infantry fighting vehicle. Other vehicles include the SAP-110 infantry fighting vehicle and the SAP-120 armored personnel carrier.

Artillery

The Army's principal artillery weapons are the SAP21H self-propelled howitzer and the R9 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), both mounted on tracked platforms and assigned to heavy mechanized units. Fire support for light infantry units is provided by towed howitzers, including the 105 mm SAP105H[32] and the 155 mm SAP155H.

Aircraft

While the Army operates a few fixed-wing aircraft, it mainly operates several types of rotary-wing aircraft. These include the SAP-99AH attack helicopter, the SAP-58SH scout helicopter, the SAP-60UH utility helicopter, and the SAP-47TH transport helicopter.
