- Origins and Background : Athanesia in "the real world" is the first and oldest country in a shared world project called "Projekt Myra" - http://projektmyra.de - where an unlimited number of people describe and devellop and (if they want) simulate fantasy nations and parts thereof over an unlimited number of years. This is going on since 1982, in German language, but efforts have been undertaken to embrace english speaking players and writers and especially artists too. The Free Land of Athanesia is a small, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 7 million (and growing) are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to a certain amount.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Law & Order and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 46%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Information Technology industry.
