Introduction

The Federated Socialist States of Ato-Sara is a medium sized nation within the Haven region. The FSSA is a moderatly isolationist country which has little involvement in affairs outside it's own well protected borders however it does engage in international trade and travel, being viewed by some as an idyllic island of calm in the turbulent modern world and is a popular tourist destiantion. Whilst disdaining of outside affairs the federation does consist of several smaller territories that have joined Ato-Sara for the neutrality and security offered, these make up a group of 45 associated territories ranging from small islands to continetal protectrates, the most prominent of these being Kima-Tara and the Yerai archepeligo.

In Ato-Sara and it's associated territories the democratic values on which the current establishment where founded on are some of it's most prized possesions. They make up part of the so called 'three jewels' of Ato-Saran society, the other two being the Ato-Saran people and the land of Ato-Sara itself.

Geography

Ato-Sara itself is a lush land of sprawling rainforests, endless plains and towering mountains. The north and south are largely flat plain, with networks of rivers carving channels across them. They are extensively farmed and a large part of the rural population lives and works there for a living. To the west is Ato-Sara so called 'backbone' a large mountain range that runs north to south, most of the upper peaks including the sacred Shen' tin mountain are snowbound all year round and there are several large glaciers. The central eastern region is dominated by lush forests which stretch from the mountains to the coast these forests also host the largets river, the mighty Kojong which splits into fertile delta feeding into the Rongjin channel. Along the main channel of the Kojong and its many tributaries the floodplain has been turned into the breadbasket of the Federation. Sprawing metropolai are found all over Ato-Sara, the biggest cities being Tian' an on the northern coast and Kaigon sitting in the middle of the Kojong delta.

Cities of Ato-Sara

Quanoi: Quanoi has been the seat of power in Ato-Sara for over five hundred years and is home to not only the former Imperial palace, but the House of representatives, People's Congress and dozens of other central government institutions and offices. Quanoi is a well developed city with an efficient public transport system, many shops, malls and offices line the centre's streets making the city a hub of business for the country.

Kaigon: Originally named Xishen during it was renamed after the fall of the corrupt Fai dynasty and their colonial allies to the socialist and nationalist revolutionaries. The city is the home of the Central Strategic Command and many other military organisations, including the shadowy ASIA head quarters and the famous Jade Guard building and monument. Kaigon is Ato-Sara's largest city and the largest port, sitting on the Kojong delta it is a major entry port and trade centre with agricultural and industrial products being taken from up river to be loaded on to a constant traffic of container ships that frequent the port.

Tian' an: This major northern industrial city has been a centre of industrialization since the Arixonian colonial period. Once crowned with a skyline of smoke belching stacks and brick towers it is now home to much of Ato-Sara's high tech businesses and industrial giants. Most of the city is owned by corporations with ION Industries IIG taking up nearly a square mile of space all to it's self. Tian' an is also a centre of learning with the university churning out some of the country's finest engineers and scientists many of which go on to work in the corporations that are based in the city. So prestigious is the University that some students will pass up offers from Kaigon and even Quanoi just to go there.

Shen' tin: An ancient city that was once long long ago the capital during the first Kim dynasty. Shen' tin is a site of major religious importance to the country's Buddhist majority, the sprawling temple monastery is constructed of monolithic stone blocks quarried from the mountains above. The Shen' tin monastery was founded in the early Kim dynasty when Yuo Tze Lang, a disciple of the Buddha came to Ato-Sara and asked the then Emperor Kim Kae Tai, fresh from the fires of battle within which he forged his Empire, to be able to build a monastery on the slopes of the holy mountain Jan Pin Lan. the Emperor accepted and when he saw the finished complex he was so impressed that he built his imperial palace along side it. The palace was burnt down during the Ko usurpation and moved to Quanoi where it stands now, and the monastery has been expanded further so it now encompasses half the city.

Wu Lao: Wu Lao is another major industrial city on the banks of the river Kojong. Raw materials a brought down the river from the mountains in the west and from the logging camps to the north. While Tian' an has converted mostly to Hi tech industry Wu Lao has remained the capital of manufacturing and heavy industry in Ato-Sara, manufacturing everything from tea cups to planes. The finished goods are then sent down stream to Kaigon where they are shipped out. One of Wu Lao's main problems is overcrowding, many Ato-Sarans come to seek jobs there, but the city does not have enough room for this growing population. Also Wu Lao has the highest poverty rating of all Ato-Saran cities.

Jao Gai: This small border city has long guarded the river Yiu as it enters Ato-Sara. Not until recently of any historical importance it has been a melting pot of different cultures for centuries. The large Muslim community in Jao Gai and the surrounding area have had profound effect on the city's appearance with mosques and towers echoing the call to prayer. Jao Gai's claim to fame happened in the closing hours of the lightning revolution when the corrupt royaists of the Fai dynasty where expulsed from Ato-Sara, The final showdown between the revolutionaries lead by Kaya Ji Zhou and the last royalist forces happened in the fields just north of the city. With the defeat of the royalists the area took to the new socialsit ideals with a passion and is now one of the most concervative socialist areas.

Jiang Ho: This new city is the home of Ato-Sara's rich and famous and common holiday destination. Its sandy beaches and long boulevards have been associated with glamour and fashion for years. Once just a small mining town, Jiang Ho blossomed when the mines shut down and in their place arrived casinos and film studios. Most of Ato-Sara's entertainment for both the small and big screens is filmed and produced here. Rich Ato-Sarans pride themselves in owning expansive villas in the hills north of the city. The port in Jiang Ho is mainly used for pleasure cruises and incoming container ships, but some export is also done.

Teijing: This beautiful city used to be the site of a Major fortress and was the home of the navy during the early Kim dynasty. However during the Ko Dynasty it was seized and razed. The great fortress was left in ruins and the ships were moved to Bu' Jan where the current naval yard now stands. During the colonial period A lot of beautiful and grand buildings where built at Teijing and its historic architecture is a big Tourist attraction. Just outside Teijing however the Banpo delta's natural advantages of harbouring ships are again being put to use as the pipelines and ships of the XaoGaz IIG carry crude oil from the Oil drilling rigs to the north in the Teijing bay. As well as an oil rifenery many other chemical industries have been established, such as LNG and ammonia production.

Ato-Saran Society and Culture

Ato-Saran culture stretches back to antiquity to the founding of the empire amoung the fertile plains of the Kojong, Louji and Ti'ren rivers. Overtime it has been added to and changed forever by the influnces recieved from invading and neighbouring powers, this has resulted in a rich and diverse culture.
