The Aurono Self-Defense Forces, abbreviated ASDF are the Auronese armed forces. Due to the unique nature of the nation, the military combines weaponry from World War I or World War II with the latest achievments in mech research, and Battle Androids are commonly seen soldiers within the ranks of the ASDF, making the ASDF a true multitech military. Some batallions also fight with swords (especially BattleDroid squadrons) and officers and many common soldiers carry guntos. Although technicially a regular military with an army, navy nad airforce branch, Aurono was officially never allowed by the Japanese motherland to possess any kind of own military. After the royal family had split, the Japanese Army in the nation was thus redesignated as „Self-Defense Forces“. What is more, Imperial Japan under Tenno Seito has declared that, in case of war, the ASDF is not to be called, or treated as, a regular military force, and its combatants should be treated as irregular combatants. This deprives them of protection from the Geneva convention (more specifically, the First Geneva convention, as the 1949 revision did not take place in the alternate timeline of Aurono), which states that any enemy combatant caught in uniform should be treated fair and given a fair trial, and various other agreements handling the tratment of POWs, allowing the Imperial Japanese Army to imprison and even execute any captured ASDF combatant without a trial in the case of war, which is otherwise common practice for irregular combatants, like guerillas and terrorists, and generally military personell fighting without uniform or visible sign of their allegiance. The ruling prince or princess of Aurono is also head of the military. This is currently princess Momoko Aurelia Hanasaki.

Drafting

The ASDF are a voluntary army, both by conditions imposed by Imperial Japan upon Aurono's independance and by choice of the ruling family.You have to be older than 16 to join, although children as young as 6 can join the Auronese Scouts (with consent of their parents), the ASDF's youth organization ,which mostly trains them in disaster relief and self defence, to a greater extent than it is taught in schools anyway.

Aurono Border Defense Force

The ABDF, Aurono's army, is the largest branch of the ASDF and traditionally the only branch that can be entered by Auronese citizens of non-japanese descent (Americans). The ABDF is officially declared a border guard. Weapons employed by this branch are often little less advanced than those used during World War II or even World War I, and it is generally fitted with arms that have been removed from the regular Japanese Army. The army has a significant artillery batallion. Subsidary branch of the ABDF are the Aurono Air Defense Force, or AADF, which includes anti-air battalions, and the Aurono National Defense Force, a sort of national guard. The units of the ABDF usually have battalion- or brigade size.

Ranks

The individual soldier is called "Regulator". They are equipped with MP5 SMGs, battle armor and batons and serve both as military and armed and riot police.

This battalion established the outpost in Los Alamos and is the battalion of the feared and famed Unit 444.

Aurono Protected Merchant Fleet

The navy was the first branch of the armed forces of Aurono, since it was the navy to first set foot on American soil. Traditionally, it is the most honoured branch. After the Auronese gained independance from Imperial Japan, larger ships, like the Yamato, were called back to the Pacific, and only a small fleet remained under the command of the Auronese imperial family. It was designated "Protected Merchant Fleet" to stress it's function as a non-military fleet that solely consists of merchant ships with self-defense measures (See Merchant cruiser), and is officially declared a coast guard, which, of course, is by far no accurate description of the navy, which also operates Destroyers and even an Aircraft carrier (the IAAC Asakura).

Aurono Air Defense Force

The ASDF's airforce is called Air Defense Force and consists of several Airships, Zero Fighter planes (though not the latest models) and older aircraft taken over from the former US states and also keeps several Ohka kamikaze craft, but these are unlikely to be used in any future conflict in favour of aerial torpedos, R-400 Oka cruise missiles bought from the Soviet Union or manned ICBMs like the Shinryu. The Airfleet is well-funded and responsible for all fancy research projects.

Auronese Nuclear Weapons Project

As a sign of independance from the motherland, Aurono (more specific, the Auronese Self Self Defense Airfleet), which deals with military experiments, had, under Princess Yoko, picked up the hasty nuclear arms project of the United States of America in Los Alamos, which had been abandoned by the US following a successful japanese fire balloon attack on the site. All other nuclear powers of the world (Imperial Japan, the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany) have warned Aurono that this would not be tolerated. Indeed, many court advisors in Imperial Japan had warned that this could trigger a Third World War, because Nazi Germany thinks Aurono to be a puppet state of Imperial Japan, and the presence of nuclear weapons on the American continent would not only increase the total number of Japanese nuclear wepaons, but also put the German North American Territories, German South America territories, German Greenland, New Swabia and, with little advance in missile technology, Nazi Europe itself within range of Japanese nuclear weapons. German diplomats have stressed that this would violate the Mutual Range Limitations Pact between Japan and Germany and seriously stress the alliance of the two natiosn. However, many court advisors came to the conclusion that the Germans were only looking for a reason to go to war, no matter how small, and that in the long term, war would be inevitable. Nonetheless, Aurono continued its nuclear weapons project [1]. During a visit to Los Alamos, both Prince William and Princess Yoko were assassinated by a BattleAndroid of unknown production dressed up as an old woman. No details could be given on the Android because it was almost completely destroyed by heavy fire from securtiy personnel onyl seconds after it had fired. The assassination is generally credited to American Freedom Fighters, a loosely organized terrorists and guerilla group inside Aurono, but it has been specualted that the move was done either by the current Japanese Emperor Seito or by Nazi Germany. The nuclear arms project was, reluctantly, halted and Princess Momoko has not ordered it to continue since, as she had before converted the feared biological weapons agency known as Unit 731 into a civil medical research center, following her personal motto „Come together as one people!“, which forbids the use of weapons of mass destruction.

Unit 731

Unit 731 was a feared japanese bioweapons research unit that gained extreme knowledge on various bacteria and viruses through human experimentation in China. The unit played an important role in the occupation of the US after it had discovered a cure for the spanish flu that plagued the US. By vaccination of the Japanese forces, their fighting power was not diminished in the US by the desease, while the US Army was seriously affected, plus many american communities and even states, joined the Japanese in exchange for medical treatment, which was simply a blood plasma transfusion from vaccinated japanese army personell (It was highly forbidden vice versa to transfer blood from Americans to Japanese, so to keep the Japanese blood clean). The unit was later also given the authority of handling racial hygene in Sudeki. Under the reign of Princess Yoko, Unit 731 was cut off many of its authorities, which angered many an influential scientist. Princess Momoko finally abolished Racial Hygene and the Unit as a bioweapons research unit was transformed it into a civil medical research society.
