Bailie refers either to an administrative area smaller than an alderdom within the United Kingdom of Isselmere-Nieland comparable in most instances to a district, or to the senior magistrate responsible therefor. The word derives from the Anguistian for settlement, baile, which was incorporated into the local Anglic language, Isselmerian.

As district

Bailies as districts fall into two categories: country bailies and urban bailies.

A country bailie is not a permanent entity with fixed boundaries, although altering those borders requires an act of the respective provincial legislature and requires the consent of the governed. These bailies are commonly named after the largest, oldest, or most noteworthy town within their circumscription, and are somewhat similar in size and/or population, as well.

Urban bailies are typically named after towns that have been incorporated into a larger conurbation and as such have greater permanency and variation. Larger cities, such as Daurmont, may have several large bailies sub-divided further into wards.

Both types of bailie are usually governed by an elected council that oversees such matters as education, public transport, and the like.

As magistrate

A bailie is a district magistrate responsible for overseeing summary and small claims courts within his or her territory, and is typically the chief magistrate of the resident court of first instance where applicable.
