The bakrani (þ or BBK) is and always has been the official currency of Bedistan. Its value is currently fixed with respect to gold at þ265.14 per ounce.
The currency was assigned an initial value in the mid-2000s and allowed to float semi-freely, staying mainly within the range of $0.60 to $0.65 American. After a while, it was fixed at $0.62914, which the government at the time claimed would "facilitate trade".
In 2033, the administration of President Oliver Sloas chose to remove government control of the currency's value, which severely destabilized Bedistan's economy for several months as the bakrani suddenly tripled in value, finally coming to rest at a value of around $1.75. The bakrani's value has slowly risen since then, and by the 2080s, it held a value of approximately $2.11.
On October 1, 2090, the Bedistani Legislature approved a measure to redefine the worth of the bakrani. They decided that one ounce of gold would be officially equivalent to þ265.14, approximately the value it already held at that time.
Coins
A bakrani is divided into one hundred parts, called cents. Coins are usually used for dealing with amounts of money less than one bakrani. They come in four denominations:
- Penny (þ0.01)
- Nickel (þ0.05)
- Quarter (þ0.25)
- Single (þ1.00)
Bills
All larger quantities of money usually require dealing with paper bills of some kind. They also come in several denominations:
- þ1
- þ5
- þ10
- þ20
- þ50
- þ100
- þ500
- þ1,000
