Baltrion came into existence in 1326 CE, by the Duke Archibald Baal. He was angered by the conditions in Europe and sought out a better life. Followed by many poor folk stricken with disease and malnourishment, Baal settled in the northern-most tip of Pye, on a peninsula just above the Urtusk Inlet. Life was hard, and the people were toughened by fierce competition for food and suitable land for farming and construction. It wasn’t until 1343 that the port city of Magnasakia was founded. After that, many other cities and towns followed, including the capitol city, Baalton. Baltrion was a fairly peaceful nation until the death of Archibald Baal in 1350, just before Baltrions’ twenty-fifth anniversary. It was the next week that a group of rogue pirates attacked Magnasakia, burning several buildings to the ground before the King Thomas Baal (son of Duke Archibald Baal) got their hands on the vandals in question. The King sentenced them to death, but the people who owned the ruined buildings demanded to be paid for the damages by the government.

Governmental Changes

King Baal II, seeing that the working class and the poor were banded together on the issue, so the King decreed that the pirate was to have their ship taken and the parts used for the construction of the replacement buildings. They were also sentenced to build the shops and homes they destroyed from these materials, under the close supervision of the Baalton Guard. So was the first great shift in Baltrions governing.

Seeing how the people could band together to overrule the Kings decision, Alfred Edward Douglas began secretly meeting with democratic citizens who wanted the freedom that they believed was theirs. When Douglas had enough followers, he stood with them outside the castle and shouted at King Baal II to come for judgment. The King stepped out on to the balcony above their heads and told them all to go away. When he told them to go away, he was shot in the throat by an arrow and killed. His crown fell, and Douglas smashed it with a large rock.

Everything in the castle was traded away for Nis, and the money was put into the castle basement as a sort of treasury. The castle was turned into a place to hold the weekly town meeting, for which attendance was voluntary. Every citizen of Baltrion attended the first meeting. Democracy was the accepted form of government until the year 1942, when a Russian communist named Viktor Kozlov immigrated to Baltrion and suggested a switch to communism at the next town meeting (still held, though attendance had decreased and each sector had it’s own, and they were now monthly). The attempt was met with limited success, and though many were convinced that communism was a step in the right direction, the upper class of Baltronians refused the idea, and some of the middle class felt it was too restricting. As a result, Kozlov proposed socialism as the economic system of the country.

While he was on the podium, he was fired upon by a rich man with a .44 pistol. The shot missed narrowly, and the man was hung the next day for impeding the growth and stability of Baltrion. The proposal passed up the ladder, and was eventually accepted as the new economic system.

The Baltrion/MUSA Crisis

It wasn’t until 2006 that Baltrion was involved in its first war. The neighboring nation ofMUSA Warriors and Baltrion collided. When the warrions landed on Pye, they revolted, Baltrion decided to take the peaceful approach, and gave MUSA Warriors control of the peninsula. The nation of Musa Warriors soon began its nuclear program. Unbeknownst to this treason, Baltrion got in another heated argument with MUSA Warriors, and it ended in a mud-slinging shouting match. Despite this, Baltrion gave MUSA Warriors the benefit of the doubt, until the first of many nuclear weapons was tested on Magnasakia. The city that had stood for 600 years was obliterated by a single attack, and Baltrion immediately called her soldiers to arms. But the viking warriors were quick, and had the benefit of being prepared before the treacherous first shot was fired. The enemy invaded Baltrion, and essentially had won the war, until they met such fierce resistance at Baltrion that their numbers greatly diminished from guerrilla tactics. MUSA Warriors wisely retreated to regroup. The Baltrionian resistance was strong, and the enemy was forced to delay the invasion. Therefore the recently established border remained. The Baltronians had defended their freedom, and were now prepared to make the MUSA Warriors pay for their betrayal and foolish offensive

But before an invasion could be launched, the other nations in Pye (most notably Bambeaner, Dunnathia, and Yataghania) demanded that the fighting cease immediately. A shaky treaty is now in effect, and all MUSA Warriors are banned from Baltrion under any pretenses. Most Baltronians are pushing for a nuclear weapons program in Baltrion as a result of The Baltrion/MUSA Crisis, though the government has taken a strict anti-nuclear policy into effect, and MUSA Warriors are generally considered a nuisance at worst. However, despite many attempts, the Council of Pye has refused the proposal to ban MUSA Warriors from the region. Due to the attacks ofMUSA Warriors, Baltrion has been forced to up funding for its military, and have military police patrolling Baltrion/MUSA borders at all times. A proposal is in progress to build a twenty foot high, ten foot deep wall between Baltrion and her burlesque neighbor, but no such action has been taken yet.

Baltrion Today

Despite the devastating toll that MUSA Warriors attack took on the morale and economy, Baltrion is improving steadily. The citizens pride themselves on having no upper or lower classes, and everyone is charged for foods and healthcare based on what they are capable of paying. It is hoped that with such obviously progressive attitudes and governments, Baltrion can rise above the example set during The Baltrion/MUSA Crisis, and to rise above MUSA Warriors, and become one of the most respected nations in Pye.
