Beatrice Elizabeth Turtledove, Danaan politician, has been a member of the Senate of Pele (local legislature for the Principality of Pele) since 1991. She was a Reformer until the reorientation of Danaan politics following the Shattering, at which time she joined the newly emergent Labor Party. She has been President of the Senate since 2005 and leads the strongest Labor government of any of the Danaan principalities.

So far in Turtledove's presidency, her emphasis has largely been on legislation to secure the rights of Pele fishermen, especially within the Polynesian community, against the large companies which purchase, preserve, transport, and sell their fish. Turtledove claims that these fishermen have worse wages, hours, and conditions than any other workers in the Resurgent Dream, a claim which can be largely substantiated with census data. Furthermore, she blames their condition on the fact that the large companies do not directly hire the fishermen but purchase the already caught fish, thus exempting themselves from national and principality law regarding wages, hours, and conditions. Distribution industry leaders claim that, on the contrary, their practices do not involve an evasion of labor law or any labor policy at all but free contracts between individual economic agents. Within the Senate, legislation to ameliorate the conditions of the Polynesian fishermen is supported by the Liberal Party, who view the issue as one of racial discrimination rather than one of labor rights. Outside the Senate, the Danaan Artisans' Union (DAU) is participating in an ongoing effort to organize the fishermen.

While Turtledove's initiatives all adhere to the Labor Party's Principality Platform, she is known to have supported a number of platform planks going against the conventional wisdom of the party and against the advice of national party leader Abraham Goldfarb at the convention to develop the platform. While only some of her proposals were accepted, her unorthodoxy has increased her popularity among the electorate while alienating some party insiders.

Turtledove was elected in the wake of the great disaster of the Shattering. While her government has implemented few concrete measures to deal with the tragedy, she has been conscious of people's need for symbolic reassurance and has often appeared at events to remember the tragedy, mourn the damage done, and recognize the huge change in Danaan national character. However, she claims that the only real way to deal with the Shattering is to "go on living."
