History
The name Berlin, which is pronounced /bə(r)ˈlɪn/ in English and /bɛɐˈliːn/ in German, is of uncertain origin, but may be related to the Old Polabian stem berl-/birl- "swamp".
The first written mention of towns in the area of present-day Berlin dates from the late 12th and early 13th century. The suburb of Spandau is first mentioned in 1197, and Köpenick in 1209, though these areas did not join Berlin until 1920. The brown bear has been used as a symbol of Berlin since the thirteenth century. A seal used in 1280 shows two upright bears facing each other with the red Brandenburg eagle in the center. Sometime after, in 1910, World War I broke out and GroBdeutsches Reich was invaded and the former empire fell. In 1919, the Republik of Beimar, based on Beimar was established by the people, but in early 1933, the Über-Nationalsozialistische GroBdeutsche Arbeitpartei gave power and replaced the Beimar Republik by the new GroBdeutsches Reich.
