A Brief History

Bettia first made their appearance on the world stage when they entered the Baptism of Fire tournament preceding World Cup 22. Led by star striker Stuart Abdul-Rahim, expectations were high, but these were quickly dashed when they were edged out 1-0 in their opening game. However, a draw followed by a confidence-boosting win saw them qualify from their group in second place, setting up a regional semi-final tie with soon-to-be neighbours Nedalia. This led to the now-infamous 'Aroras vs Lions' episode which saw an over-enthusistic TV reporter release a pack of aroras into the lion pen at Lorshill Safari Park, just to see who would win. Unfortunately, the footage went off-air before the final result of this epic battle could be decided. Luckily for Bettia, their team came out on top and, after notching up another win after that, saw themselves reaching the final, which they won by a crushing seven goals to nil. This win was slightly soured by doubts being raised by the media in Vilita over the quality of the Bettian media's reporting of the tournament.

Their first foray into the World Cup proper saw them presented with the daunting prospect of an away trip to Starblaydia, but they came away with a creditable 0-0 draw. They ultimately finished third in their group, five points away from qualifying. The following World Cups saw a similar pattern of mid-table finishes and entries into the Cup of Harmony. The tournament following World Cup 26 saw them travel to Krytenia and Druida, and come away with a 3rd place finish.

This non-qualfying sequence was broken in World Cup 25, when they finished top of a very tough group amid national celebrations. Their first ever appearance in the finals saw them square off against much-fancied Bedistan in a game which finised 1-1. A defeat in the next game looked to have ended their tournament, but a plucky victory in their final game saw them finish second in their group. A win in the second-round further astounded sports fans home and abroad, but their run came to an end in the quarter-finals when they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by eventual winners Starblaydia.

The following World Cup saw Bettia once again crash out at the qualifying stage, thanks mainly to a pair of crushing 6-1 defeats by Fmjphoenix, and so they entered the Cup of Harmony once again. A familiar pattern of a win, a draw and a defeat saw Bettia finish second in their group. Subsequent wins over Cuation, Hypocria and Andossa Se Mitrin Vega saw the Aroras reach the final, where they faced their rivals Turori. Confidence was high going into this match, but this confidence was ill-founded as the Eels cantered to a 4-0 win.

Ever since then, Bettia have never failed to qualify for the finals stages, but were unable to repeat their heroics of World Cup 25, their best finishes coming in World Cup 31 and World Cup 32, where on both occasions they were knocked out at the second round stage, losing on penalties to the eventual winners.

While the Aroras were making strides on the World Stage, they were also doing the same in the regional arena. Ever since the Under 21's World Cup ceased to operate, the Football Association of Bettia have used AOCAF as the Under 21s main tournament. A third place in AOCAF 13 was bettered in empahatic style at AOCAF 15. The Bettian team finished top of their first round group, only dropping two points along the way. This was followed by victories over Oliverry, The Lowland Clans and Krytenia, setting up a dream final against their neighbours Nedalia. A stylish 4-1 win saw Bettia lift their first major trophy since their initial success.

However, the Aroras' proudest moments have come at World Cup 33 and World Cup 35.

Friends and Rivals

Over the years, Bettia have developed ties of varying sorts with teams around the world. They have developed particularly strong bonds with two of their neighbours, Nedalia and Hypocria, a bond which even led to a tri-nation team dubbed the Hyporions being mooted for Cup of Harmony 16. However, this was dashed after disapproval from fellow competitors.

Another nation with whom Bettia has developed a tie with is Jeruselem. Their world-famous reporter, sports coach and porn star Dazza Dallas was spotted at a number of Bettia games wearing a green and gold cheerleader's costume after her own team were knocked out of World Cup 33. Ever since that memorable World Cup, the Gnomes of Az-cz have also become friends with the Aroras, with a number of friendlies being played.

Bettia seem to have formed a somewhat unhealthy rivalry with the twin nations of Vilita and Turori over the years, mainly due to their penchant for donning custom-made red strips especially for any matches against the Aroras, knowing full well that Bettians are naturally averse to this most evil of colours. Bettia have countered this tactic by wearing their second-choice blue and white kits and donning specially-made blue-tinted sunglasses manufactured by Bettian sportswear firm Azurlens. This paid dividends during their first round matchup against Turori, where the overabundance of the colour blue proved decisive in the Aroras eventual 2-1 victory.
