Bofolso

Bofolso is the traditional cultural center and original capital of the Meritocracy of Rational Self Interest; it has been inhabited for more than two millenia and was the center of a pre-industrial empire. A fourteen century-old Buddhist temple still stands in the heart of the city, dwarfed by an adjacent colossal geodesic dome of glass and pink vinyl. There are thousands of educational institutions, including both the largest and the oldest universities of the Meritocracy; students from a thousand islands and a thousand foreign nations throng the streets and fill the air with loud music and marijuana smoke. Bofolso is also the largest maritime outlet for the densely populated island of Bodo, and hosts a large fishing fleet and a great variety of light and heavy industry. Several major software companies have their headquarters here, as do some important banks and insurors; the famous pink and blue whale of Federal Mutual Assurance, filled with a half million cubic meters of helium, floats cheerfully a mile above the city in good weather. Bofolso is also the heart of RSI's publishing industry, both paper and electronic, with millions of titles released every year.
