Brechenalss was a nation in the International Democratic Union.

History

Brechenlass was founded by German immigrants in 1592. It was a German colony, but its status faded due to the immense distance. The nation did not have any specific date of separation from Germany, but by 1650, it was obvious that it was no longer a German territory. In 1650, the Brechenlass Kaiser, Horst Himmlich, bulked up the military and began capturing lands near Brechenlass.

In late April of 2007, Brechenlass's government collapsed violently, throwing it into complete anarchy. The entire armed forces of Kedalfax and Brechenlass were in the Gulf of Simtropolis searching for survivors of the Giotizia disaster, so the nation's government was destroyed.

Government

The Democratic Republic of Brechenlass was best described as a cobbled together, makeshift post-war democracy. It's system of making laws was complex and bureaucratic, yet somehow the people were satisfied. Hidden within tomes of legislative law were millions of exceptions and rules governing the making of laws. As such, laws rarely got passed on a national level.

Officially, there were no states or provinces. The first official subdivision was the county. However, counties had no place in the national government.

The voting process was more or less direct. For a law to pass, a petition was signed by at least 128 citizens. It then went to the President, who could veto it. If it was vetoed, another petition had to be signed by 273 more citizens. If it wasn't vetoed or had the proper number of signings, it went on the national ballot for the quarterly elections. If it got a popular vote, it became law. Quarterly elections were held at the beginning of February, May, August, and November.

Because of the length and frequency of the elections, voter turnout at the quarterly national elections was low. And because of the lack of efficiency in the national government, some areas had begun grouping together in smaller entities. These smaller entities varied greatly. Usually they had a leader of some sort, and passed their own laws. While not expressly allowed, there was no statute against them either. Some say these entities were part of the reason for the nation's collapse.

Some groups had tried to pass legislation to make these districts an official part of the national government, however such attempts had been ill received by much of the public. In one area of the nation, violent outbursts happened after almost every national election. Federalization fighting claimed an estimated twenty thousand lives since 1993, when the idea first went to vote.
