Many years ago Caedryn was a great, though autocratic, empire. However, the Imperator of the time and many of the records of the First Empire, as it is now called, disappeared, leaving the vast populace in disarray. Civil War broke out and anarchy was the rule of the day until Imperator Julius Vercingetorix united the warring factions and forged the reunified Empire which consists of the territories of the old Empire. His successors have reformed the Empire so it is now a democracy, making nearly any thoughts of secession or rebellion unthinkable. Now the Empire is one of the most powerful nations in The Hrydonian Orbit, and has the highest population in the region. After the collapse of Hrydonia into anarchy, Caedryn is now the indisputed most powerful nation in the region.

History

The origins of Caedryn have been lost in the sands of time. Few records survive from the First Empire prior to the First Interregnum, or First Intermediate Period, but all that has survived is records of transactions by the Government and a at-the-time top secret assault on a terrorist camp near the border in the deserts. Julius Vercingetorix re-unified the Empire and declared the beginning of the Second Caedrynian Empire. The Empire began to decline, and the last of the Servian dynasty, Primus Servius, adopted a young commoner as his heir after his death. The commoner was named Flavia Servius, which resulted in much contraversy and discord, and at some time after this transpired, the Second Empire broke up into smaller states ruled mostly by the nobles. The Third Empire was formed and several years after the Empire was reestablished, it was declared an Interstellar Empire and the motto of the Empire was changed from "Ave Imperator" to "Imperium ad astra", which can be variously translated as "Command to the stars" or "Empire to the stars", generally depending on how literal one wants to translate.

Politics

The Empire of Caedryn is a constitutional monarchy, similiar to the RL United Kingdom due to its lack of a constitution, and instead relying on traditions. Some have survived the First Interregnum or as it is also called, the First Intermediate Period, while others have come about after Imperator Iulius Vercingetorix reunited the Empire. The Imperator, or Emperor as he is commonly refered to in other polities, is the Head of State and occasionally also the Head of Government. The Head of Government is usually known as the Imperial Chancellor, although less commonly also can be known as the President, Consul, or Prime Minister.

The legislature is referred to as the Senate, with the Council of Elders being the equivalent of the RL House of Lords and the Plebian Council being the equivalent of the RL House of Commons, with the Council of Elders being comprised of 800 noblemen and the Plebian Council being composed of some 600 people who are, by law, not members of a noble family.

(more on law system later) Foreign Relations

The Caedrynian Empire has never been particularly active internationally, about the only communications having been a long-forgotten affair about terrorist training camps in the deserts and the odd embassy. The Empire's foreign relations are handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or the Foreign Ministry.

Military

The Imperator is the Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Caedryn Armed Forces, and they are controlled (for the most part) and managed by the Imperial Ministry of War. During the Second Empire the Imperial Army was organized into standard division-sized units called legions, usually numbering around 15 to 16 thousand men. Now, legions are from 10 thousand to 20 thousand persons in size, but usually around 15 or 16,000 soldiers. Little else has changed since the Second Empire. Traditionally the legions have a Latin name in the style of the Roman Empire, such as Legio V Ferrata (also known as the Fifth Mechanized Legion), but usually their English name is used, such as "1st Legion", "3rd Legion", "3rd Armored Legion", and so on. The Imperial Navy, with the addition before a certain point of the Imperial Air Force and Imperial Space Force, form the rest of the Imperial Forces. After moving into space, the Imperial Space Force was founded and the Air Force's atmospheric craft and responsibility was divided between the Imperial Army and Imperial Navy. Shortly before this, the waterborne Navy was incorporated into the Army, and once superluminal spacecraft were developed, the Space Force became the Navy, sometimes known as the Imperial Starfleet, responsible for all military offensive and defensive operations beyond the atmosphere of a planet.
