The Republic of Caledone is a large, safe nation, remarkable for its punitive income tax rates. Its compassionate population of 36 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 100%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising fourteen-year-old boys selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Long arduous trials are held for the most trivial of offences, torture is illegal, Caledone's educational system is the envy of many and regarded as a pinnacle of educational achievement, and libraries are now installed with jacuzzis and mini-bars. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Caledone's national animal is the dolphin, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the token.

Caledone is ranked 17th in the region and 118,337th in the world for Largest Trout Fishing Sector.

Current Issues

Privatised space programme: Believing it to be undesireable for taxpayers to fund an expensive and potentially fruitless space exploration programme, the parliament of Caledone decided that it would be best to offer the programme to private industry; not something that happens very often in the country's mainly state-run economy.

Unfortunately, to the great distaste of our citizens, the powerful multi-national soft-drinks producer, Pepsi, got the rights to the project, resulting in a 'soda-bottle' shaped rocket. This could not have been foreseen.

RKKA affiliation: As part of the region of Socialism, Caledone is affiliating itself with the RKKA, a 'red army' of "an alliance of regions which fight for a common goal, to over come capitalism and fascism... an army to protect it`s members against possible invasion of the mentioned enemies."

The parliament of the Republic of Caledone supports the idea of a defensive army to protect the region from outside aggressors but we are concerned that this 'red army' could be abused as an empire-building tool. Caledone does not condone the overthrow of any democratically elected government, no matter how 'bourgeois.'

The RKKA must clarify its diplomatic position, so in turn Caledone can clarify its position on the RKKA. In the most extreme scenario Caledone will withdraw from this region, but hopefully this can be avoided.

National flag: Diplomatic pressure from the Scottish Parliament (under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom parliament) has raised the possibility that Caledone will have to change its national flag (the Saltire) in order to avoid confusion with Scotland.

Even patriotic factions within the nation of Caledone are repeatedly calling for the creation of an original Republic of Caledone flag.

Designers are at the drawing board around the clock trying to create a flag that will encapsulate the spirit of the nation, its history, its future, and its socialist principles.
