Canadian Standards for Diplomatic Relations

Canada attempts to promote democracy by exchanging ambassadors with regions which meet certain standards of good governance. In particular, we look for regions which:

  • Have a bulletin board or website which allows for communication among its members, and with outsiders.
  • Have a constitution or equivalant, which defines key aspects of citizenship and government, and which is clearly adhered to in practice.
  • Have effective provisions whereby members can appoint and remove members of the government.
  • Have effective provisions whereby members can seek redress for grievances.
  • Generally promote an atmosphere of free speech and tolerance.
