A canton is a territorial subdivision of a nation or region. Often cantons are similar to states or provinces. Though the name comes from the noun to divide or portion, many NationStates governments that are organized in cantons can be characterized by the strong division between regional rule, also known as a cantonal system of government, and national rule. These governments tend to have weak national governments.
