The caretaker of government (Pacitalian: Il consigliere degli governmenti) in Pacitalian federal politics, refers to the incumbent prime minister that, when defeated in a general election or serving out his/her last term, maintains control of the government from the time of the confirmation of federal general election results, to the swearing-in of the next prime minister at the Official Ceremony for the Transferrance of Power. Usually this period lasts a minimum of three or four days, and usually goes from the election date to the immediately following Monday at noon local time, when the power-transferring ceremonies are usually held.

A caretaker of government maintains the same powers as when they were prime minister but is not referred to as such. Caretakers of government may also be appointed when a prime minister is assassinated, resigns or dies in office, so that somebody can hold executive powers until the next election. The CdG then has a maximum of thirty days to allow the incumbent party to select a new leader, and must call an election the day after the leader's selection, with a voting date no later than 30 further days after, meaning (s)he is in his/her office for a maximum of sixty days. Usually this job is handed to the senior deputy prime minister, or if he/she declines, the junior deputy prime minister.

Currently, Albinanda Serodini serves in this office after the resignation of Constantino Sorantanali. She has already begun the process of asking the FPD to select a new leader, to begin that process of democracy while she holds leadership in the interim. She can be Consigliera until no later than 10th October, 2006, unless the legislature chooses to vote for an extension of her adlitemnity.
