Carlsbad is the most prominent university city in Lavenrunz. Originally founded as a trading town, it became subject and protected by the Bishop of Carlsbad, whose successor in 1229 supported a number of educational concerns. This came under the patronage of the Von Sachshausen family in 1419. The universities there include religious, polytechnic and secular colleges.

In the late fifteenth century following an uprising that resulted in the death of the ruling bishop Emperor Rupprecht III bestowed the city upon Erich von Ihengen, one of his constables, who was rumored to also be his bastard son. By the time of the sixteenth century it was a prominent seat of a dukedom.

At present, this dukedom is largely ceremonial.
