Caselonia's neighbor to the south, Melbournistan, was lost as a Caselonian possession in the waning years of Imperial Caselonia in the very early 20th century. Melbournistan, propped up by various regional imperial powers, spent the next nine decades as a monarchy, almost completely isolated from contact with Caselonia, especially post-revolution. On 14 December 2003 Melbourni rebels seized key installations in the capital of Astana, then called Jamestown. The rebels quickly claimed that their government, collectively known as 'Free Melbournistan', was the legitimate government of Melbournistan while the remaining Royalists, of which there were few, fled to Breyoun to form a government in exile. Notably, almost the entire Melbourni navy remained loyal to the King. Caselonia was the first nation to recognize the new government and extend offers of aid, and was followed by several nations. Caselonian troops crossed the Melbourni border on 15 December 2003 and almost immediately found themselves in combat with royalist indigenous troops in the city of Winston as well as Daemonian paratroopers that had been dropped, fatally, over a Caselonian anti-aircraft unit. Caselonian planners had initially expected a short conflict as the ousted royalists tried to organize a government-in-exile but imperialist nations, including Breyoun, which Caselonia fought a long, costly war with in the 1930s and 1940s, supported the ousted King and pledged troops to retake Melbournistan. The Caselonian military forces have undergone a substantial number of revisions through the years. For the purposes of remaining concise this particular series of articles will cover only the modern incarnation of the Caselonian armed forces while historical organs and units will be covered in the main history section in future.

Overview

The Caselonian armed forces currently consists of four branches: the People's Army, the People's Navy, the People's Air Force and the «Airborne & Strategic Rocket Forces». The "traditional" branches of service have been called the People's Army, Navy and Air Force since 1928 when they were renamed from the "Caselonian Red Army of Workers and Soldiers." Needless to say the name of the entire military from 1916-1928 was an unwieldy mouthful but post-1928 military focus, both in civil government and within the military establishment itself, has been on modernization, increasing efficiency and effectiveness and, to some extent, Westernizing the tactical and logistical models. 1928 is also the same year that ranks were reinstated and a more conventional (and more effective) military model returned to the Caselonian services.

The Heartland
