Overview

Though the class is numbered DD-001, the Cassandra class is actually Bryn Shander's second destroyer type. When the preceding Talos class destroyer was deemed underpowered and unsuitable for front-line combat, two new types were hastily designed to replace the existing Talos class vessels. These new ships were the Cassandra class and Artemis class destroyers. After the designs were finished and put into production, the older Talos class ships were renumbered and delegated to patrol duty. The new Cassandra and Artemis class destroyers, however, were designed to compliment each other, with the Cassandras providing heavy particle cannon fire while the Artemis class vessels focused on torpedo warfare. Being larger and more heavily dependant on energy weapons, the Cassandras carried twice the amount of reactors as their sister Artemis class vessels.

As with the rest of Bryn Shander's other second generation ships, the Cassandra class destroyers were all upgraded several times over their lifetime, with systems such as shields and hyperdrives added to the pre-FTL era warships.

As with the Artemis class, 216 Cassandra class vessels were produced over the lifetime of the design.
