History
Chatham is one of the oldest independant duchies in Maanenland. It was formed as a loose coalition of city states centered around the Duke of Chathams residence in Chatham city.
During the Civil War of Maanenland the duchy showed it's traditional strong support for Cliffton Duchy.
In 1982 local government reform partioned the provinces holdings south of Riversdale forming the new province of Hollings Valley. The size of the province was then effectivly halved.
Economy
Chatham is a predominantly rural province comprised of many small farming settlements which make up the bulk of the areas economic activity. The soils and climate favour vegetable growing for which the area is well reknowned.
Industry and commerical activity are centred around the metropolis at Chatham , before nationalisation chatham was home to several small quality car manufacturers which were swallowed up to form the Maanenland Motor Corporation.
Chatham is home to some of the richest people in Maanenland and is home to several large estates that are still controlled by families that date back several hundreds of years. For this reason the area is generally considered to be "rich".
Politics
Maanenland First has had a traditional strong following in the villages of Chatham and amongst the large owners and thus the party dominates local politics with very few opposition candidates. The present Lieutenant Commander is the longest serving of any LC in the House of Regional Commanders having been there since 1952 , he has recently announced that this will be his last term of office before retirement.
The urban areas of Chatham do not have a sterotypical Democratic Socialist Alliance following as one would expect from such an area , the Liberal Democratic Party of Maanenland is the main opposition to the predominantly MF run city and county councils.
Geography
Chatham sits at the bottom of the mountain ranges to the north and so is seen as a relativly flat province with large grassland plains with many lakes and meres.
