This article deals with the facts and policies pertaining to immigration, citizenship and nationality in ESAT.

Citizenship

Legal definition of an Esati citizen

Under Esati law, a citizen is any person who holds Esati nationality and Ariddian citizenship, is aged 16 years or older (or has attained puberty if he or she is an Indigenous Esati), and has a diplomatic or administrational function within ESAT's embassy to the United Nations. Thus an adult who is an Esati national is not necessarily an Esati citizen.

Obtaining and renouncing Esati citizenship

Any person who meets the above criteria automatically obtains citizenship from the moment it is officially confered by the Esati head of State (Secretary). The new citizen then receives a passport. Unlike Ariddian passports, which are dark red, Esati passports are dark green.

Citizenship may be renounced freely at any time.

An Esati citizen who ceases to work for the embassy loses citizenship but retains Esati nationality (unless he or she renounces it).

An Esati citizen who loses or renounces Ariddian citizenship loses Esati citizenship, but may retain Esati nationality.

Rights and duties of citizens

Esati citizenship gives one the right to vote in any referendum to object to the appointment of the head of State.

Nationality

Esati nationality may be obtained in a number of ways. An Ariddian civil servant who begins to work for the Esati embassy to the United Nations may obtain both nationality and citizenship, as described above. The only other way to obtain Esati nationality is by marriage or by descent. The spouse (or unmarried partner) of an Esati citizen (but not of a non-citizen Esati national) automatically obtains Esati nationality if he or she requests it. Similarly, a child born to an Esati citizen automatically obtains Esati nationality.

It is not necessary to be an Ariddian in order to obtain and retain Esati nationality. For example, Christopher Rorth, husband of current Esati head of State Christelle Zyryanov, has Esati nationality (not citizenship) although he is not Ariddian.

Non-citizen Esati nationals are entitled to "B-class" (non-citizen) passports.

Famous Esati

There are currently 49 Esati citizens (A-class passport-holders). Best known are Christelle Zyryanov (head of State) and her deputy, Min-Sun Lange. Desmond White, coach and captain of the Esati national football team, is an Esati citizen. One-time Olympic athlete Annabel Mild has Esati nationality by marriage.
