County cricket has been played in Cockbill Street for many years, but not until recently have the Streetians kept official records of the game. With the growth of a Bettian league as well, however, the game has seen a revival in the Street, and official records started in 1753 (Streetian timelines).

Teams

There are eight county teams participating in the Streetian Leagues, one from each of the seven Streetian counties, plus the team from Vimesbairn, CSCT.

The one-day league is structured on exactly the same basis, but with matches limited to 50 overs per side, and with a simpler point system - two points for a win, one for a tie, and no points for a loss. There is also a 50-over knock-out tournament called the Commander's Cup (just as in football), and a Twenty20 Cup, with an initial group stage determined by geography followed by semi-finals and a final.

Twenty20 Cup

The Twenty20 Cup is an opening-of-season slogfest, designed to pull crowds and income in - which is desperately sought, despite the fact that the Streetian working-week is only three days to accomodate cricket-watchers. The tournament plays a large part in keeping county finances steady. The structure is as follows: two initial groups of four teams, Group East and Group West, fixed by geography. Within these two groups, everyone plays everyone in a double round robin, six games for each team in total. The top two in each group progress to the semi-finals, and the winners in the semi-finals progress to the final.

In Season 1, Woodshire won thanks to a solid performance throughout. They won eight successive games out of eight, and even when the dwarves bowled them out for 76 in the final, they worked out a way to have them all out for 53. The dwarves were also impressive, winning the Western Group of the group stage with five wins and one loss, but they lost to Northset and Woodshire (in the final).

The second season saw the dwarves lift the silverware, despite not impressing in the group stage, where they only won three of six games. However, they trounced Woodshire in the semi-final, and after an agonising final in which Wynshire required three runs off the last two balls when Petteri Goldthrower took out the last wicket, B'zugda'hiara became the second winners of the trophy.

County Championship

For the clubs and the players, the County Championship is arguably the most important tournament. Matches are played over four days, with two innings per side, and normal first-class cricket rules apply. Ten points are awarded for a win, five for a tie, two for a draw, and none for a loss. Bonus points are available in the first innings of the matches, as follows:

For batting:

  • 1 point for 250-299 runs
  • 2 points for 300-349 runs
  • 3 points for 350-399 runs
  • 4 points for 400-449 runs
  • 5 points for 450 or more runs

Teams also can gain points for bowling other teams out for low scores in the first innings, as follows:

  • 1 point for 350-301 runs
  • 2 points for 300-251 runs
  • 3 points for 250-201 runs
  • 4 points for 200-151 runs
  • 5 points for bowling a team out for less than 150 runs

The Streetian County Championship saw Jotneheim dominated initially, winning their first two matches by huge margins. B'zugda'hiara also won their first two matches, but less convincingly, and were trailing by eleven points when the teams met at the K'haz'bak K'hrikit'gazh'dukh. What followed was a rout. Jotneheim batted first, making 512, and then bowled the dwarves out twice for 392 in total - winning by an innings and 120 runs, their third innings win in as many attempts. Woodshire took over second place following their seven-wicket win over CSCT - but they had already lost by an innings and 128 runs to Jotneheim. In the fourth round, Jotneheim endured their first draw, attempting to chase down 294 to win but failing by 28 runs. That allowed Woodshire to close the gap to 12 points, after a clever declaration and good bowling against Northset. On the fifth matchday, Woodshire travelled to Wynshire, and after a 202-run first-innings lead and a subsequent four-wicket they acquired 17 points from the game - three more than Jotneheim, who had been bowled out for 244 by Northset. Then, Woodshire won a close game with B'zugda'hiara, where they had been bowled out for 137 in their second innings, thus setting a target of 252 - and then bowling B'zugda'hiara out for 173 to win by 88 runs. Jotneheim had it easier, chasing 149 to win with six wickets to spare, and increasing their lead to ten points. However, the next two rounds were decisive for the league title. Woodshire first failed to bowl out Rothershire, only taking fourteen wickets in a drawn game, thus allowing Jotneheim to run away with a 21-point lead. And on the eighth matchday, Woodshire gained a 78-run lead on first innings, set a target of 287 which was higher than all the scores so far in the match, only to see Jotneheim chase it down with four wickets to spare - and increase their lead to 29 points. With Woodshire struggling for form - even losing to Northset by an innings - the title race became a one-team show. Jotneheim eventually won eleven matches, drawing their other three, while Woodshire lost the second-place when they were bowled out for 74 against B'zugda'hiara, losing by an innings and two runs. That allowed Wynshire, who had a spotless post-season with six games unbeaten, including five wins, to take second place.

Season 2

Yet another season of batting paradises around the nation, as 22 of 56 matches were drawn and six batsmen passed 1000 runs. Tara Heighes became top-scorer, despite a spot of poor form near the end of the season, which indeed became the fate of the entire Wynshire side. They had fought in the top for most of the season, but their unexperienced skipper Geoff Sandiford struggled to get his declarations right, and that cost them two matches. Before the last round, however, Wynshire had an eight-point lead over Jotneheim, who had recovered from a woeful start to the season after five matches without a win.

Indeed, Jotneheim had been very close to beating Wynshire on matchday 12, leading by 103 runs on first innings and having over 100 overs to bowl the opposition out, but they'd settled for a draw in the end. However, on the last matchday, Wynshire lost their ruthless streak. Batting first, they imploded to 191 against a weak Ayreshire bowling attack, and eventually lost by seven wickets without gaining a single point - while Jotneheim bowled out Northset for 134 and recorded a thumping 257-run victory to go top of the table and take their second County Championship in two years.

One-Day League

The one-day league is the little brother of the County Championship, with one-innings matches of 50 overs each. The same structure applies, though - a double round robin, two points for a win, one for a tie, no points for a loss, and the team with the most points at the end of the season takes the trophy.

Season 1

Jotneheim with a game to spare, taking their third of four possible titles and completing an excellent season. There was a fight between Jotneheim and Wynshire, but when Wynshire lost their head-to-head match by three wickets, the rest of the season became fairly academic, as Jotneheim eased to the required victories. The final margin of two points was the result of Jotneheim giving up in the fourteenth round, when they had already taken the title.

Season 2

The second season was surprisingly even. Many teams had a shout at winning it - after four matches, seven teams were within one point of the leader - but Woodshire broke free after a stunning streak of five successive victories, surviving several narrow escapes against Wynshire and Northset. Wynshire disappointed at times, and at other times were phenomenal, and were thus fourth at the midway stage, while CSCT had taken an early lead - only to suffer two successive losses and fall to sixth. Northset took over, and led until matchday seven, when they were trumped by the league's biggest rabbit - William Mason - who made 1 not out, his second highest score in one-day cricket, and survived to see Woodshire make it through by a wicket.

They followed up with a win over B'zugda'hiara, and even a loss to Jotneheim wasn't so crucial, but the league lead changed on matchday ten. Woodshire lost for the second time running, to Rothershire of all teams, and Ayreshire - despite a negative net run rate - could go top thanks to a six-wicket win over Northset. Ayreshire were quickly toppled, however, crumbling to a 25-run defeat to Woodshire, who went on to beat CSCT by 50 runs and establish a controlling lead. However, a three-wicket loss to Wynshire saw them throw that away, and the title eventually came down to one match - Wynshire v Ayreshire. Woodshire could have challenged, but lost their match to Northset by two runs, so with Wynshire on 16 points and Ayreshire on 15 one of the two had to pass Woodshire on 16. Ayreshire swamped Woodshire thanks to 169 from Chad Wakely, his only contribution worthy of note all season (7 innings had yielded 107 runs) - but it was enough to send them to the top after a 105-run win in the league final.

Commander's Cup

The Commander's Cup, named after the football knock-out trophy, is very similar to its bigger brother in football. Only eight teams participate, they are the county teams in the other leagues, and they are randomly drawn into quarter-finals. The winners proceed to semi-finals and the final, and the winner of the final can lift the Commander's Cup.

Woodshire and Jotneheim met in the final, having had comparatively easy paths there - Jotneheim knocked out Ayreshire and bowled B'zugda'hiara out for 157, Woodshire recorded two wins with margins around 60 runs. In the final, though, 248 for 7 was not enough for Woodshire, and Jotneheim won by six wickets.

Season 2

Main article: Cockbill Street Commander's Cricket Cup Season 2

Jotneheim won another easy title as they thumped their opposition, winning by 173 runs, 58 runs and six wickets respectively. Their batting was just too strong, led by Leucite, who made 248 runs in two innings, but he was injured for the semi-final. The final was perhaps the most impressive effort, as they swept aside Ayreshire for 142 runs and then batted with ease to the target.
