Communist Socialist Alliance (CSA) is a large left-wing region in Nationstates, formed on the 26th March 2007. However, the CSA is considered a scion of the former region of Communist -now defunct- and use of these two names can be used interchangeably.

History

Pre-Summer Revolution

Due to a lack of solid and substantial evidence before the Summer Revolution extremely little is known about the region at this point. However, most historians tend to agree that the UN delegate was Le Faire -a nation that has since vanished- but any knowledge of a governmental system has since passed into obscurity. It is largely assumed that one did not exist. In addition to this there was no founder in Communist, a fact that would have repercussions in the months to come.

The Summer Revolution

The date of the Summer Revolution is unknown, and is referred to in the region's official history at a period known as 'circa late July'. The event is celebrated on the 4th August, though this is the actual date of the founding of Pax et Socialism, the region's forum, which was created by -Led Zeppelin- shortly after the new government came to power. The main figure of the Revolution was Socialist Utopia, who organized the revolt by convincing all UN nations to elect him UN Delegate. In exchange for the endorsements he offered Cabinet positions. Amalgamated Provinces (known otherwise as 'Archaix'), later to become president, was among those in the first government. The first government would be, however, short lived.

Counter Revolution

While the Summer Revolution was immensely popular with the members of Communist -which at this time amounted to less than thirty nations- who were sick of inertia, this did not prevent a so-called 'counter revolution' taking place. On or around the 4th August a Spanish nation known as 'Terrinha' gained the UN Delegateship, sending shockwaves throughout the recently-deposed government. Terrinha later apologized for the disruption, claiming it to be an accident, and the former government was restored by the 6th August, two days after the formation of the forum.

Dictatorship

From the 6th August to 21st September Socialist Utopia led the region himself, using the title 'Presidente'. In his government were Archaix (as Foreign Minister) and CommunistChi (as Minister of War). This was a period of slow and stable growth on both NS and the forum, the latter of which became the center of all organization. From this point it is easier to trace the history of the region, as everything after the middle of August has been written down.

This period is also known for the first war Communist would ever participate in, the 'Communist-Blood thirsty nazi party', which resulted in the retreat of Communist forces. The date given for the invasion is usually held at the 17th September, and the leader of armed forces for Communist was Archaix. Despite the failure of the plan, the defending region died following crippling inactivity months later.

First Utopian Period

The promised elections eventually came on the 21st September 2006, with Socialist Utopia and Albionon competing for the post of President. The former won by an overwhelming majority and a new government was formed, mainly out of the participants of the last one.

Progress was made, however. Communist rose from thirty to sixty members during the course of these few months, and the Constitution of Communist was passed a few days after the election. The IRON Politburo (Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Operations Network Politburo), the regional defence headquarters, was also established in November. This would play a key role in the turmoil of January, but was largely criticized for dire inactivity and failed to meet the expectations of its creators.

First Archaixian Period

Archaix won the next election on the 28th November, and leads the most famous Cabinet in the region's history. It composed of: Seven Glades [Comrade Rhys] (Governor), Socialist Utopia (Foreign Minister) and Led Zeppelin (Minister of Culture), all of which were, or would become, prominent statesmen.

The new term started out well. The Constitution was revised for the first time, and the regional newspaper, the Communist Tribune, was created on the 9th December. However, this progress would be marred by a series of tragedies which accumulated at the start of the new year.

The Communist-Corporate Conservative War

Just before the CC invasion began, Archaix lost his internet connection. The CC, consciously or otherwise, took advantage of this political darkness and sent dozens of attackers to unseat the UN Delegate. Without a founder the region was at the mercy of the UN Delegate, and this position could not be allowed to be taken. Power was automatically endowed on Comrade Rhys (who was Governor), although Archaix managed to regain the connection a few days after the start of the battle. According to the regional history,

"The battle started with Amalgamated Provinces holding only 23 endorsements and the invader, Red Army Soldier (aka "Verak" of Corporate Conservative). The battle for communist ended with 51 defenders brutally stamping out 43 invaders."

The defense was successfully supplied by many defender regions and some allies. However, it was a slip that the leadership would not allow to occur again.

The 'Terror'

Following the conclusion of the battle a bewildered Amalgamated Provinces (who had come to the battle late) destroyed all opposition on NS, excluding even Free Grenada, a recent recruit from a conquered socialist region. Many were later allowed back in, partly due to the immense consternation at the president's actions. Some, including Socialist Utopia, were more concerned by Archaix's failure to password-protect the region.

Second Utopian Period

During the resulting dark-age of the war, power transferred to Socialist Utopia during a quick and under-advertised election. Both progress and numbers were never regained, a fact that greatly scarred the region and her inhabitants.

Utopia's First Scandal

On March 17th it was revealed by an angered Allied Communist States member that Socialist Utopia had tried to join the communist members of both regions together, ditching the 'revisionist' members of Utopia's own. This act brought about great anger also in Communist, resulting in the resignation of Archaix from his position of Intelligence Minister. Despite contemplating defection to Anarchy, the politician remained, albeit without a position. Socialist Utopia apologized for his actions, but urged a greater part for communists in the region. This would not, however, be the end of his controversial actions.

Revisionist Rise

As if in reaction to this militarism, a surge of revisionism swept the leadership. Led Zeppelin, Free Grenada, the increasingly influential Comrade Rhys and even Archaix could be counted among their number, and this seemed to irritate Socialist Utopia further. On 18th March, a mere day after the scandal, Led Zeppelin published the first issue of Vox Populi, a revisionist monthly.

Birth of The CSA

After many weeks of deliberation, the Communist Socialist Alliance was born. Over half of Communist's 40-strong population transferred to the new region, while the former region was locked. However, this would not be the end of it's long story. The new region of the CSA was a political move as well as a military one. While it offered protection in the form of a founder, the very name suggested a new link between socialists and communists. This seemed to end the friction between the two camps, but this was not necessarily the case.

Utopia's Second Scandal

On the 2nd April, after a smooth rise in the amount of CSA nations (and decline in the number in Communist) and a bright new united future, Socialist Utopia announced his sudden retirement from the region. While this was deplorable for its short-notice (it left the region leaderless until 19th April), it was dangerous as it contained the founder nation's password. The password was noted by Led Zeppelin and almost instantly deleted from the message. It was subsequently changed when it fell into the hand of the next president, Comrade Rhys. Socialist Utopia left the CSA for the Nationstates Communist Party (NSCP), where he accumulated further wrath from the CSA for his denunciation of 'the leadership there', and generally spoke ill of revisionist, who he claimed now ran his former region. In addition to this he also tricked nations still remaining in Communist, telling them to go to the NCSP, not the CSA. Led Zeppelin and Archaix are amongst the first to denounce him, and secretly organize a trial. The latter obtains the help of the NCSP themselves following the conclusion of their own internal investigation.

Rhysian Period

On the 19th April Comrade Rhys was elected President, with the General Secretary (formerly 'governor') position being filled by Free Grenada. The only communist candidate left, Thanatos, loses the Presidential race.

This period is generally seen as a period of peace (summed up by the creation of the Peace Corps, a defending military force) and constitutional revision. It also marks the start of a 'revisionist hegemony'.

Socialist Utopia's Trial

After the gathering of evidence and the formation of the trial, Archaix and Led Zeppelin went public with the trial, and revealed Socialist Utopia's messages on the NCSP forum. The trial, presided over by the communist Thanatos, accepts Socialist Utopia's plea of guilt and concludes that he is no longer allowed to return to the region. His forum account, however, is not suspended.

Second Archaixian Period

On June 3rd Archaix was elected President for the second time, winning against Free Grenada, who became General Secretary. This period is most notable for the creation of political parties -this is accredited to led Zeppelin, the admin of Pax et Socialism- which increased activity on the forum and arguably brought the thirty new members to the CSA. This brought the nation-count up to ninety members, for a time the highest in any leftist region. A new newspaper was also created by Archaix, the Gazetta CSA

Political Parties

In the CSA there are four parties: the United Democratic Socialist Party (UDSP) led by Led Zeppelin, the Independent Socialist Party (ISP) led by Archaix, the International Worker's Party (IWP) led by Trotsky and the Militant Revolutionary Vanguard Movement (MRVM) led by Thanatos. The first two are non-partisan while the final two are recognized as being essentially communist in outlook and policy. The IWP, however, is by far the strongest of the two. The September 1st Election results should show the strength of each party.

Media

Media in the CSA usually consists of newspapers. However, there have been various attempts to diversify from this platform throughout the region's existence from July 2006.

Newspapers

Newspapers remain the primary form of official expression in the region ever since the first publication of the Communist Tribune on December 9th 2006. However, there is currently one indigenous newspaper active, the Gazetta CSA. Another publication, the Monthly Leftist is published by Robespierre, ambassador to the CSA from International Nations, which deals primarily with his native region.

Communist Tribune

The Communist Tribune was a monthly publication that ran from December 2006 to April 2007, and was edited Led Zeppelin. All members were encouraged to contribute, although this proved troublesome. The format was a Microsoft Word file edited in a traditional newspaper format, complete with columns, headlines and pictures. The masthead is the paper's name in an antiquated font, although the style has been changed frequently. There has been talk of reviving the paper (as of August 07), albeit with a different name and, perhaps, a different format. Possible staff include Led Zeppelin, Archaix, Robespierre and Carops, of which only the first have been confirmed.

Gazetta CSA

The Gazetta CSA is a weekly newspaper written, published and edited by Archaix. It has run since 15th June 2007, and is up to the sixth issue. The format is in the style of a long forum post -in a deliberate attempt to escape the previous convention of uploading edited word files- headed by the paper's masthead, an overlapping of the words 'Gazetta' and 'CSA' in black and red fonts respectively. On the left is a leftist star symbol. The news is displayed piece by piece in neutral manner, covering forum events, regional news and world news in a concise manner, although a great amount of effort is made to make the publication accessible to new members. At the end there is usually a weekly interview, followed by a list of citations (a recent development in newspaper style). Recent publications have been erratic, although the content has been consistent throughout. Archaix has reaffirmed his intention to keep the series running despite a hectic schedule in his private life. The next issue is set for just after the results of the general election.

Monthly Leftist

The Monthly Leftist is, as the name suggests, a monthly magazine produced by Robespierre and test-read by Archaix, both members of International Nation's Communist Party (International Nations Communist Organization, or COIN), of which the former is the spokesman. The style is adapted from the Gazetta CSA, although there a few slight differences in content and style: the masthead features the words 'Monthly Leftist', bordered by a red line directly above and below the text, there is less emphasis on citations (as of issue 2), there are more interviews (which are displayed in the main post, rather than an attachment) and there is a more concerted effort to be light-hearted (there is, for instance, a 'Picture of the Month' as of issue 2). The series has only produced two issues, as it has been running monthly since June 2007.

Vox Populi

The Vox Populi was a monthly revisionist magazine written and edited by Led Zeppelin that ran from March to May 2007. It was notable for ignoring regional news to concentrate on history and current events. It retained the convention established by the Communist Tribune by being a downloadable word file, and developed the idea further with use of quotes, opinion pieces and large editorials. Initially the paper was criticized by Free Grenada and Socialist Utopia for attempting to make the region more 'factional', although this did not deter Led Zeppelin from creating more issues. Although the publication has long since ceased, there have been rumors of a come-back issue, however there is no concrete evidence from Led Zeppelin that this is being planned. With the interest in a new Communist Tribune this seems unlikely.
