The Coocoostan Hockey League is the highest in Coocoostan. The league consists of 12 teams of professional players in 9 different cities, some of which are named after a sponsor, but most are named after a city.

The League under the Coocoostan Hockey Federation

The modern League was founded after independence in 1990 and began play in the 1990-91 season. At that time, the league was made up of 8 teams and was under the juridstiction of the Coocoostan Hockey Federation. The league was very exclusive, with the 8 sides representing only 3 cities. The most powerful side in the early years was PLAC Coocoobad, the army side, which later became the Coocoobad Red Menace. PLAC also had 3 teams in the affiliated 8 team junior league. The league was largely successful, although it showed an unwillingness to expand or move any teams, despite poor crowds, particularly in Coocoobad at the Coocoobad Arena, where 4 teams were based. The league attempted to reform itself in the 2005-06 season, by ejecting long-time side Tre Kronor, a team of Swedish expatriates and awarding their franchise to a group of investors in South Coocoobad, who planned to base it at the new 13,500 seat arena in that area. The league also approved a move by Dragons HC from Coocoobad to Anadahl. Still, the league was seen by many as too small-time and it was widely beleived(and since proven true) that the CHF was sitting on millions of dollars in potential revenues. During the East Pacific Hockey Championship in Xiopothos, all 8 CHL owners and a group of investors agreed to initiate a hostile takeover of the CHL, with the intention of turning it fully professional(at that time, roughly half of all players earned enough to make it their only job).

The League as a Corporation

The new corporate CHL is led by the former GM and team President of the Anadahl Skates Junior Hockey Club, Marco Puhdahl. The new league was quick to announce many changes. HC Panjuhr became the Panjuhr Owls, the BSC Warriors became the BSC Tornadoes and new franchises were granted to Wajax and Aubrey. The Tornadoes also moved to Starlight City, after completing training camp in Coocoobad, leaving only the two Panjuhr teams sharing an arena. The league also spearheaded a 6 team minor pro league, the Coocoostan Professional Hockey League to develop players. The league also announced a new expansion team in Los Santos, San Andreas and that the CPHL's champion would be promoted to the CHL for the 2007-08 season, Torpedo Salamkudush won that spot over the Kalibad Mustangs in overtime of the seventh game. Players are drafted into the league the first draft after turning 18, from either a Junior league run by the CHF, or a University team. The Coocoobad Red Menace won the first title under the new format, sweeping the Panjuhr Owls.
