Histo-Linguistics

Origin

Coscivian was first spoken in the now-desolate nation of Coscivia. When the nation was destroyed, its seven colonies continued to speak and write it. The Coscivian ethnic groups created variations of the language, as well as new writing systems.

Structure

Coscivian sentance structure follows a "subject-verb-object" form. Adjectives are placed before nouns, as are adverbs, unlike many languages that have adverbs placed indiscriminantly, and adjectives proceeding nouns. Verb conjugation is unneeded, as there are only infinitives and participles.

For example:

Té feliauv ie albix

The (feline/cat) is white

Grammar and Usage

Coscivian has 4 articles: "Té", "Í", "Hva" and "Tezh". "Hva" and "Tezh" are not easily compared to English, and are only used in poetry and philisophical texts. Fynnev Coscivian includes the article "Kaù", which is a conjugted form of "Í" used to address pluralities.

Nearly all singular nouns end in the suffix "-uv". Plural forms use the suffix "-av". (i.e Pyruv{fire}, Pyrav(fires). The suffixes "-ev", "-iv", "-ov", "-év", and "ïv" are used in collectives and for special purposes.

Collective nouns typically use the suffixes "ev", or more commonly "æuv". However, this varies by language.

Written Language

Arguably, Coscivian's most distinctive feature is it's written form, The most comprehensive to the idea of the language is Kíh'êad, a semi-phonographic, semi-ideographic system, as well as others purely ideographic, phonogrphic, hieroglyphic, pictographic, geoglyphic, or specialized to certain fields. The language has been engineered so that it can be scripted in virually any writing system. THere are at least 53 different Kih'êadic scripts used throughout the Empire

The sociolinguistic status of Coscivian makes it possible for ideograms and other non-phonetic graphemes to be used in everyday life. In fact, in Despre-Tine, phonograms are found only in dictionaries. This is acheived through knowlege of the ideoglyphic sytem being taught early in juvenile education, and stressing spacio-linguistic recognition skills.
