Daodan Virus

The Daodan Virus (Influenza Daodanum Hasegawai) is a an artificial virus produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of META. It was invented as a less dangerous and less painful alternative for Daodan Chrysalis implantation than surgery and was subsequently used in a wide variety of pharmaceuticals developed by Mitsubishi, often with gruesome side effects. The Daodan Virus usually acts as a "carrier" for genetic material extracted from an individual and subjected to an hyperevolutionary process. Instead of using the DNA for growing a clone cell cluster of the host body, which is later implanted, the virus injects the hyperevolved DNA into the cells of the subject, gruadually turning the whole host body into a Daodan Chrysalis. To speed up the process and reduce the amount of virii required to be injected in order to avhieve total conversion of the host body, a certain string can be inserted into the virus DNA telling infected cells to produce more virii. If no limit is posed on the number of virus generations, the virus production continues, even if the host body is matured into the final stage of Daodan Chrysalis evolution. If a Daodan virus is injected into a person and is containing the DNA of another person, the results are catastrophic side effects. Though the body will, if it survives, eventually reach transformation, the process leads, due to the alien DNA presented to the body's immune system, to cancer-like symptomes, as the immune system vainly attempts to combat the alien hyperevolved DNA and the virus. Immune repressants can be taken, but even then, problems with the internal consistency of the body functions will arise. Originally, the virus was produced in the form of a thick, black liquid which would be absorbed by skin contact, but was later refined to pill form for easier storage and administration. The plural form of the single Daodan virus organism is always given as viri.

Prior to the discovery of the fatal side effects if injected into a person with different DNA, Mitsubishi tested dozens of promising pharmaceuticals expected of being able to combat everything from daily deases to cancer. Some were also sold. The first use was in an hair regrowth drug, called . Later, a potency drug was created, a skin rejuvenizer, and a recreational drug called U4.

Mutation

Slaves

This is what people with low spiritual power are turned into when injected with D-Virii containing DNA sampled from Zero (or any other Symbiote DNA, for that matter, but the spiritual power necessary to avoid this state becomes higher as the mutation level of the injected DNA rises). Slaves are basically zombies, mindless, stumbling, mutated creatures that a master Symbiote can actually use to feed on, and cure his wounds, as seen in the battle between Shinryu and Akuma, were Akuma used a large number of Slaves to restore his body when severely damaged.

Chosen

When the spiritual power of a victim is a little higher than that of the average human, he becomes a Chosen - a being still at the hands of the master Symbiote, but given limited free will within the frame of having his ultimate goals replaced by those of the master symbiote, in a way Deadly Brains can act independantly within the goals set by their programming. Chosens fight alot better than Slaves and even humans, showing limited effects of Daodan augmentation. They are deadly hand-to-hand fighters and can also wield a variety of weapons. If threatened, they also tend to grow extra limbs or destroy themselves in a suicide attack consisting of a burst of sprawling flesh and blasting energy. It is actually hinted that each Chosen contains a part of Muro's soul. Ryu was a Chosen, but overcame this state through the help of Kusanagi.

Kage

Kages, meaning "Shadow" in Japanese, are insectoid reapers with a design based on Mukade, the Syndicate's master ninja's mutation. They fight much better than the Chosen, but are mindless like the Slaves, and their formidable fighting skills are guided by instinct. Kages have the ability to render themselves invisible for limited periods of time (or until harmed in any way, which disrupts their ability to camouflage for a short time). Kages are mass-produced in some way and are used to gather the essence, presumably Muro's soulspark, from fallen Chosens.

Oni

"Oni" means "Demon" in Japanese. These are D-Virus enhanced elite soldiers. They harness the powers of the D-Virus through extreme discipline (and, this is hinted on several occasions, vast amounts of medication and a special radiation known as D-Reaper, which they require continuosly). There are several types of Oni, corresponding to the three-class system the Syndicate uses with all its other troops: the lowest Oni, clad completely in green armor plates, are called "Incubi" (or "Succubi", respectively, for the female version). Blue and black-clad Oni have been reported, but this remains unconfirmed and their tactical data is unknown. When an Oni's armor plating is destroyed, the soft and inhuman interior is revealed. Presumably, the plating is not only meant as a protection from damage from outside, but also to keep the sprawling mutation inside. Their armor suits also include injection systems for Hyposprays, D-Sprays, Sytropin and possibly Plutionium and Cyclobromide solutions, though this is unconfirmed. These injection systems can be remote-controlled by The Restrictors. These soldiers also have Nerve stapling chips built in.

Treatment

While the Daodan Chrysalis itself is almost impossible to combat when manifested, without killing the patient, antiviral medication combined with Sytropin injections might be a treatment against the virus. Mitsubishi's pharmaceutical division developed several products to counter the virus after the catastrophic results of large-scale test of virus products for anti-ageing and general medical use and also suggested several methods of treatment of patients, mostly based on earlier analysis of the Chrysalis. Treatment usually includes keeping the patient's body temperature and metabolism low and keeping him away from physical "wear and tear", not to give the Chrysalis anything to adapt to. Furthermore, injections of Cyclobromide to render the Chrysalis' growth hormones harmless, Sytropin and different necrostimulanzia can be considered. Chemotherapy can be taken as useless, radiation therapy would require dosages well above the lethal amount. However, on one occasion, there is an effective radiation treatment mentioned, called the D-Reaper treatment, but no further details are given except for that this maybe an integral part of the treatment that allows META's Oni troopers to control their D-Virus-induced Chrysalis evolution. It is assumed that a person infected with Daodan can lead a perfectly normal life and even be unaware of the symbiote if kept from physical harm and regularly injected with Sytropin.
