Nobody thought that a goalscoring midfielder in the style to Stephen Xousa could be found for many years. They were right. Dave Van Staveren was a goalscoring midfielder in a completely different style to Xousa. Famed for his deadly accuracy from free kicks, Van Staveren scored sixteen of his 21 national team goals from dead balls. Many saw a career in the media ahead for the bubbly and vivacious Van Staveren. It was with some raised eyebrows, then, that "DVS" was named as assistant manager for World Cup 23.
