Emperor David II ascended the throne following the suspicious deaths of his father, Daniel II, and uncle, David I. During David's short reign, he consolidated the power of the Imperial Senate at the expense of the nobility and began to transform his role as Emperor into that of a constitutional monarch. Ironically, although David's reign was the shortest of the three "Years of Sorrow" monarchs, his death is the only one not rumoured to have been the result of foul play. The Emperor died from the flu during an influenza epidemic that swept Excalbia in the winter of 1891 - 1892. Tragically, the epidemic had earlier claimed the life of the Emperor's teenage son and only heir, Prince Paul. This led to another political struggle between different factions that led to the ascension of David's cousin, who became Daniel III.
