The Holy Republic of Demetriopolis is a thriving, religious nation built on the institution of the family. In loco parentis perhaps is the most-used phrase in the nation, as children as sent off to work in labor camps as early as eight years of age. Divorce is illegal in all cases. Gambling is illegal. Abortion is illegal, even if the mother's life is endangered. Taxes are relatively low, and a flat income tax is tolerated by the people. The Holy Republic of Demetriopolis is the founder of the Peaceful Land of Lambada, where it works with its fellow nations to achieve harmony in region whose nations have starkly different views.

Lord Protector Petre II

Born outside the town of Undres, Petre Cune was raised on his family's farm. Though he never attended schooling as a child, his parents gave him a love of reading, which would feed his desire for knowledge. He decided to seek enrollment in the prestigious Academy of Avenstine, the most prestigious academy in Demetriopolis at the time, at the age of fifteen. Though the Academy had never had such a young pupil before, they accepted him for his proficiency in all areas, especially his knowledge of the history of the world.

He continued his studies with a newfound focus on Law. He realized the failures of the Measures of Decentralization, which had governed the Confederation of Demetriopolis for 75 years. He worked with the near-powerless Senate of the Confederacy to re-draft this outmoded proposal. He successfully passed the Unity Clauses, which continue to govern the Holy Republic of Demetriopolis this day. He was elected unanimously to be the first Lord Protector of the Holy Republic by the High Counselate

Political History

Around 1000 BF, the Demetriopolis League, a group of city states that had successfully held off from being conquered by the Lambadan Imperium, joined together under a common constitution to form the Demetriopolian Republic.

The Empire of Demetriopolis emerged from the crumbling Lambadan Imperium around 650 AF. The Empire was ruled by a firm hand with emperors who protected their power by force rather than appeasement. The Empire of Demetriopolis grew throughout this time in power and prosperity, but the people, even though the prosperity even benefitted the lowest of classes, were not pleased by the dictatorship. Under Emperor Demetrius XXIII, the people caused a massive revolt, during which a compact, the Principles of Concession, was made between the Emperor and the few remaining nobility to establish a Council of Oligarchs in 1025 AF.

The Council of Oligarchs ruled even more strictly than the Emperors had. The taxes neared three-fourths of the average family's income. The Oligarchs also attempted to appoint generals who payed them off the most, not those with the best military experience. Due to this, during the tenure of the Council of Oligarchs, Demetriopolis' territory began to shrink from increasing opposition from neighboring states. In 1098, the Council of Oligarchs began to have division within the aristocracy. The new appointees to the Council were some of the least popular among the aristocrats and nobles. A civil war began between the House of Rearn and the House of Gerin for full control of the Council of Oligarchs; however, Terrol Demetrius, a descendant of the overthrown Emperors led a revolt by the people which caused all the aristocracy to cede power over the government in 1134 AF under the Articles of Avenstine. Most of the aristocracy, especially those on the Council of Oligarchs, lost their land and resources to be claimed by the new Emperor, Demetrius XXIV.

The Second Demetriopolian Empire ruled more benevolently than its predecessors. The few emperora during this empire even allowed the people to vote on certain issues, including a few tax referrendums. However, the Emperors became more secluded from society, and the emperors slowly began to use less and less of their powers. The nation was governed mainly by the advisors of the Emperors. Around 1375 AF, Emperor Tardus II allowed the people to elect local officials, urbi, to assist in governing.
