His Imperial Majesty Emperor Demetrius II was the second born and eldest surviving son of Emperor Demetrius I Palaeologus and Empress Theodora Calaphates. He came to the throne at the age of eleven on the death of his father, and reigned for twenty-five years. He married Helena Angelus in the same ceremony as his coronation. The couple had one surviving son (and several still-born or miscarried children), who would reign as Demetrius III Palaeologus.
