The Department for Home Affairs and Public Works is the Ganchelkean Government Department responsible for internal affairs, such as law and order, the general interior security of the country and public safety, with respect to criminal acts or natural catastrophes, the major law-enforcement agencies (most notably the National Police and, in peacetime, the National Constabulary), civil defence, the National Fire Service, the granting of identity documents (passports, identity cards) and driving licenses. The Department for Home Affairs and Public Works is also (as its name suggests) responsible for public works, which includes the maintenance of public infrastructure.

While the Department for Home Affairs and Public Works supervises police forces, it does not supervise criminal enquiries; criminal enquiries are conducted under the supervision of the judiciary.
