Horse racing was a popular Simonvian sport and Derby seemed the idea place to race horse to attract people to this new village. Over the years, Derby became famous for its horse racing stadiums and the bi-monthly event, The Simonvian Grand National is held at the Simon Gilson 1st memorial stadium built on top of the original stadium built by architects working for Simon Gilson 1st.

The current ruler, Simon Gilson 5th was in fact born here because it was to far for his parents to travel back to Chapeltown. Simon Gilson 4th had been visiting the Derby council to discuss issues and the nearest hospital was Derby General which still operates today.
